Milk in last if using a teabag in a mug or cup. For the simple reason that the water needs to be BOILING for the tea to infuse effectively. If you've put the milk in first, the water will obviously not then be a boiling temperature.

If you are using a teapot however, add the milk in the cup first, according to etiquette!

The first thing is that the water has to be absolutely boiling. I use a hot pot at work (also called an electric teakettle) cuz the "boiling" water from the water dispenser is not boiling.

Always use fresh water. Throw the previously boiled water away. Don't know why they say this. I guess you don't want to use stale water?

Steep teabag for 2 minutes. Any more and the tea becomes bitter.

I like my tea white (add milk) with 2 sugars. If you add both lemon and milk it curdles and you have to throw it out.

Don't bother using American tea it is nasty. You can buy British tea from many websites, including Amazon. There are also local US stores that carry it. My favorite is Yorkshire Gold, sometimes they have a special limited time blend.

The milk in first or last comes from Victorian England..the "Upstairs Downstairs" era. The upper classes had fine china, which could crack if boiling tea was poured in, hence they added the milk first...which came to be seen as the posh way to make tea. The lower classes , with their rough stoneware cups could put the milk in last. As the upper classes had all the power, their way of doing things was seen to be correct. Nowadays it doesn't matter a bit, though personally I don't like a tea bag dunked in a mug!

Place the teabag in the cup. Boil the water in the kettle. Take the milk and pour over the teabag in the cup. Then when the kettle has boiled pour into the cup over the milk and teabag mixture. Take a teaspoon and add sugar to taste if desired. Then with spoon stir until the tea turns a nice orangey colour and then fish out the teabag. Stir once more, then serve.

Always use a teapot to brew the tea (3-5 minutes to your taste) and then pour into cup which has had milk added first. You seem to have attracted a number of barbarians with this question. Some of the methods described have almost put me off this wonderful drink.

Bag in, water, leave for a minute to increase strength dont ever put milk in first coz it blocks the pores of the tea bag and locks the flavour in, sugar as required, stir, milk in last stir again.
