I can relate very much to this. When I have money, I spend it, its stupid and I kick myself every time. I am living from day to day, but you know what, something always happens to see me get through. I have never been a person who has worried too much about material possessions. Some people live their entire lives worrying about gaining material wealth, yet on their death bed I wonder if they are whole inside, and how many regrets they may have, eg Did I spend enough time working on my spiritual self, or more on my material self?
It is an individual thing, what is most important to you? That is the question you really need to be asking yourself. You are self employed so you are making enough to make ends meet I would assume, because when you run out of money, you work again.
I think the biggest problem, and you dont really say, is how is this affecting your family. Are you spending the money just on yourself, or is your family benefiting from it too? What are your dreams?....do you have goals?
Maybe, if you really want to stop doing this kind of thing, you need to sit down with paper and pen and write down where you would like to be in 10 years time. Do you want something better than just living each day as it comes? Write it down, then you will find if you do, in fact, have any goals. Once you can see what your goals are in black and white, it may give you incentive to work towards those goals.
I dont know what you are spending your money on...is it to buy things for the house? Or is it to just get by on? Another good tip, when you get money, go and buy something little for the house...if your toaster is old, buy a new one. Soon you will see things improving...you are actually seeing the results of where your money is being spent and if you do this often enough, you will start to feel proud that your money is being put to good use. Start slow and build up and eventually it will give you the incentive to keep on working to provide the things that make your life more comfortable.
Having no goals I would assume is the reason you are like this. Find your goals and when you do, it will be easier to work towards, but you have to find them first.

Are you more afraid of success than you are of failure? Sounds like it. For your own sake and that of your family, please see a counselor.
