either ringworm or mange. we are just going through the same problem with our dog.
ringworm could be present if your dog has been in a scrap and the wound got infected.
the other possibility is mange. our dog's been diagnosed with having demodectic mange (or demodex), which is non-transferable from dog-to-dog or dog-to-human. it's usually passed from mum to pup. demodex mites live in the root of the hair and eats away into the root, causing the hair to fall off. after a while, it becomes a bald patch - like your dog's. scab could be from your dog scratching itself from the itch (which comes from secondary infection, as demodex mite bites are in itself not itchy).
if it's still a pup, then it's not unusual to have an 'outbreak', as the dog's immune system is still not fully developed and is unable to properly control the mite population. if it's an adult dog, then something could have set it off - stress, vaccines, other diseases.
either way, you still need to see a vet and get it treated. we've had to do a lot of reading up on demodex to understand if it's a more serious underlying problem with our dog's immune system.

Call around to vets in your area and see if anyone can work out a payment plan with you. There could be anything wrong with this dog from allergies, fleas, mange, etc. etc., and only a vet can tell you what the appropriate treatment and diagnosis will be. It sounds like at the very least your dog needs oral antibiotics and a topical cream/spray to get this under control. I don't know why owners think that there's some magical solution to every malady that can be administered at home, but there isn't. If you had sores all over your body and were pulling out your hair, wouldn't you go to a doctor?

First of all take him to a vet. I was told my springer has Cancer almost a year ago. He has monthly ck ups and we watch him extra close. He is not in any pain and his weight is good. By keeping up with his vet visits and paying attention to him, he doing ok. Hopfully I won't have to put him down for a while yet. My Vet has been taking care of him since he was 9 weeks old and he is about to turn 13. Any time you have a question about your pets health you should see your vet as soon as you can. It's only fair to your pet, they can't speak and tell you what is wrong. If I hadn't been watching my springer I may not have him right now. Please take your pet to a vet.

post pictures if you can. without seeing what the scab looks like it's hard. It could be anything form him scratching himself from a bite (which you won't always see holes, like from misquitoes for example).. or it could be ringworm (but that doesn't leave scabs.. just a red mark with hair missing)

It could be a fungus infection called Ringworm. Take it to the vet to get it diagnosed becuase if is Ringworm, it is contagious to humans.

I agree, you should see a Vet. It does sound like a "hot spot" to me - when our dog had them, we were told to keep it clean and dry and it would heal on its own. (No licking or scratching allowed).

it's probably mange. A vet can treat it easily. Left untreated it's grounds for animal abuse in many places.
