The place that hit the Empire state Building was a bit smaller than the ones which hit the WTC - furthermore, this may sound strange but, the Empire state Building (at least where it was hit) was more a brick outside finish - this helped when the plane impacted the building, the resounding shock wave & energy was easily absorbed by the building.
As for the WTC, the force of impact & energy generated not only helped create a high energy are in the building but it also condensed this energy & the iron used, although very solid, became weak & with the weight of the top of the building also pushing down on all of this area, well, the rest is unfortunate history...

Here are some facts
1. the steel used in the WTC was ASTM E119 High grade fireproofed steel.

That kinda steel, even if exposed to jet fuel, burning @ 2000 Degrees F would take several hours to melt or "weaken". The towers collapsed in 56 & 103 mins respectively. Not to mention the columns inside the tower were reinforced with concrete.

The plane that hit the Empire state building didn't run on jet fuel.

I was shocked that it went down so quickly since I had read that the steel used could withstand 2000 F temp. and should have been able to last for hours. I remember thinking how could this have happend so fast! Very sad!

I did at the time, but I've come to terms with it. It seemed so impossible when it happened, but now it seems like another lifetime ago.
