While hummingbirds are probably the champions of backwards flight they are by no means the only birds that can fly in this way. When two herons or egrets fight, periodically one of them caught at a disadvantage in the dispute will flutter backward. Occasionally warblers fluttering at the tip of a branch as they pick off insects will flutter backward when they overshoot some flying insect. It is probable that any bird which uses fluttering flight can move backward when pressed to do so.

I've seen geese fly backwards (during a bad storm and the wind was like 70 mph). Anyway, the hummingbird.

The hummingbird, or any bird that gets sucked into a jet engine - they can come out backwards, sideways, forwards, upside down ... and singed too.

Hummingbirds, they sweep there wings forwards and down to hover in place and fly backwards, so one do it in Canada when i was a kid, smallest is the bee humming bird, very very small. has to suck nectar constantly it uses so much energy just flapping its wings.
