Do you think public schools should have their students wear uniforms? first of all i am a high school student and not a teacher or anything like that. i thought uniforms looked alright. it might be fun to see what it would be like to wear one all the time? and i am not talking about the dorky ones the schools pick out, i mean that students should get to pick and or design their own school uniforms! It would be soooo easy to get dressed in the morning and parents wouldn't have to take their kids shopping as much. (don't get me wrong i luv to shop) my mom hates it though?Any input? and i want everybody to answer. teachers, students, parents, etc. and specify which one you are.

To start with, do you know why some schools now require student uniforms? Secondly, I am a parent. If you know the answer to my question, then that would be fairly self explanatory, correct? Some kids parents can afford the very expensive clothes their kids want. Others, on the other hand cannot afford it. The ensuing result is; bullyism from the rich and famous. I don't think those actions should ever take place, for any reason! So, I agree with uniforms. But why would there be any sense to making your own? Would that not be the same as having the best(at least for some)?

I am a parent of a kindergardner who wears uniforms to school. Yes, it is much easier to pick out what my child will wear to school. Also, while shopping we didn't argue about what she or I thought was acceptable since she has to wear uniforms. But, as with all good things comes the bad. Uniforms are very expensive.(I spent $60 on 3 things at one store) Sometimes they don't fit right and need to be altered.$$$ Then, you have to buy nice clothes for home use also intead of one good shopping trip for all clothes. Then in towns with uniforms the few places that actually sell them sell out quick so then the mad rush is on trying to find a store with uniforms in your child's size.....the list goes on. High school kids hate the fit of most uniforms and the lenght of the shorts. There are lots lots of pros and cons. Then with the individually thing if you come to school in the same uniform everyday people will still know your poor. If your hair is always cute and you wear 5 different uniforms a week people will think your rich. Either way uniforms do not take away from a persons individuality.

Hey there...
For many years I attended a school that had a very strict dress code when it came to uniform. We all complained about it & the school stuck by the decision & now years later I look back at the photos & realise we looked great.
All the people who complain about individual style need to think about weekends, that should be the time to express yourself with your clothes. Weekdays should be for expressing your intelligence & style in your school work!
I've lived in in 7 countries in my life, some of them school uniforms were mandatory & some were optional. The most successful uniform programmes were ones where the school held a design competition with the students submiting their ideas & the school chose the best one with regard to appearance and affordability.
As a parent it's a pain that my kid has no school uniform as he then doesn't have any clothes that are special for going out at weekends & chosing what to wear each morning wouldn't be such a chore!
In my experience school uniforms are good for: keeping all the kids on the same level. What if someone's parents can't afford the latest cool shoes or clothes it just lays the kid open to ridicule and bullying. Let's face it, school kids can be really mean & nasty to each other.
The drawback is usually style & servicibility, kids can't be going to school in the dead of winter in thin t-shirts & short skirts. So a large wardrobe of school clothes would be needed!

I think uniforms (especially ties, belts, matching shoes) should NOT be introduced into public schools.

I think these uniforms can make kids and teens feel depressed or too restricted and can restrict their creativity. Plus, it may affect their scores.

Schools want uniforms because they supposedly stop bullying caused by what kids wear. However, I think that uniforms could have many negative psychological effects that we may not know about.

I think the best way to try to stop this bullying is to fund more ANTI-BULLY programs and other programs that send the message that someone should not be judged by what they wear for ALL GRADES.

We should start some sort of movement. Kids should probably just wear school badges.

Having spent time in the military where everyone must be dressed the same I think that uniforms would stifle individuality to a degree. Having said that I also think that there is a place for school uniforms - and not just religious schools. If the school has a problem with gangs wearing their colors and causing problems, uniforms would help alleviate that issue. Remember, you are there to learn and to grow. Even though uniforms may inhibit individuality, gang colors, the desire to fit in and open warfare inhibit learning even more.

i'm a teacher and a former uniform wearer (12 years catholic school)

i think there are positives and negatives.

positives:
1. spend less money on clothes
2. clothing is appropriate for school (that's my teacher comment)
3. no "bullying" or "teasing" people based on clothes
4. easy to get dressed in the morning, you can use the time you save picking an outfit out for other things

negatives:
1. some may feel they lose their sense of individuality
2. it will be really hard to get everybody to agree on one uniform
3. if you only have one uniform, you will have to wash it frequently

as a former catholic school girl i have to say that most days i didn't mind wearing them. however, my school gave us frequent "dress down" days where we could wear what we wanted.

These days everybody has thier own style...and some peoples styles can distract in a school enviroment. I do believe students should have to wear uniforms. Its okay to express yourself, but on your own time. School is a place to learn....it shouldn't be a fashion show.

I'm a parent.

I believe that although high schools need to reform students with stricter dress codes, a school uniform for a publicschool is NOT MANDATORY. It would be completely unfair to restrain a high school student's clothing. Agency must be considered at all times...because if you look at it this way, what high school student would actually wear the uniform.

As a parent who as done both uniforms and no uniforms, I think that uniforms would help a lot of things. For those parents who can't afford the popular name brands it would take the pressure away. And for those kids who really have bright and awesome personalities but are looked upon as wierd because of how they dress it would help show their true selves. I think it would a good solution. Prayers =)
