It is not clear to me whether you meant you left US over six months each year since 2001. I'll just assumed that is it what you meant.

To be eligible for citizenship you must be "in continuous residence" meaning that you have not left US for a long period of time. If you leave US for more than 6 mos but less than a year the law states that you have disrupted your continuous presence. To prove that you have not, you will need to provide the original IRS Form 1722 listing the tax info for the last 3 years, or copies of your income tax forms you filed for the last three years. Also if applicable: proof that your family have resided in the US during your absence, copies of rent or mortgage payments, and copies of paycheck stubs.

I suggest you go to the website and check it out.

I advise you to talk to a lawyer, as far as I know if you are out of the country for more than 6 months without an approved permit from immigration you lose your residence, because you are expending more time in another place, and that makes you resident of that other place, one of the things that they inquire in the application for citizenship is about the times and how long you have been out of the country in the last 10 years; those long times out of the country may disqualify you, so... check it out

You usually have to wait 5 years since you've been a permanent resident to apply for citizenship

Nope. Six months is the minimum.
It obviously didn't mean that much to you anyway.
