Sweetheart, it is never easy to watch our children grow up. It forces a realization on us, that some parents just aren't ready for. You need to reinforce that you will be writing her every day, and love on her as much as you can before you go. Tell her you love her more than you want to, ask to go to dinners, try to share more than enough time with you. Don't bring up the trip, she doesn't' need to be reminded again...and she doesn't need to be reminded that there is crime anywhere you are.
She needs more support, love, and admiration right now. This is very hard for her, and the best thing you can do for her is tell her 'Mom, I know this isn't easy. It's not easy for me either. But I will be back, I'll write as often as I can, and I will think about every day...twice a day! I'll miss you.'

Show her pictures and give her time before you talk to her again. My only child went to Italy for a year and I loved it more then her. I had a chance to clean her room and throw out things that I have been wanting to for along time. She called by calling card once a week, I got a letter four times a mouth. I did not mind sending her the calling cards. that was my way of staying in touch with her. She is now in New York for the next four years and I get to see her one weekend out of the mouth. We still use calling cards and the mail gets alot from the two of us. I also go to see her once a month for one week. The year 2012 my, daughter will be a doctor and I'm very happy that I let go three years ago when she turned 18. Her year in Italy she study very hard. I am very proud of my now 21 year old little girl.

all mamas are nervous when their children move away from home for the first time, it comes with being mamas. as you're moving much further away than most kids would after graduation, into a country with a different language and where you won't be able to come home for the weekend, she is of course proportionally more nervous than she'd be if you only moved two states away. could you afford inviting her over with you for a couple days? maybe she could take you there when you move, or come on a reconnaissance visit with you, help you find accomodation and all that. that way she'll see you don't want rid of her and she'll be able to convince herself that you're not moving to a dangerous place (i assume you're not moving to naples. if you are your mom has a point). also, that way she'll be part of your life for that much longer and can feel she's done her best as a mother. if you can't afford to bring her on a visit with you, maybe you could try to explain your motivations to her, how you think living in italy might help you achieve your goals, introduce her to italian culture and its beauty and sophistication - make her see that not all italians are mobsters and guys who want to lure her daughter into bed for short. i'm yearning for tuscany now... good luck! :-)

Tell her you love her and want to be a successful person and make her proud. Tell her she has raised you to be a great person, you dont want to let her down and that this is an excellent opportunity that you dont want to look back on as having missed because of her feelings about it and that you really want to share the whole experience including planning it with her. Maybe write her a letter so that you can get all your feelings across to her.

Tell her that she has to let you go if she loves you as much as she tells you.The way she behaving, is the attempt to impose excessive predictability and direction on you which often is associated with insecurity or a lack of trust. I do not know if she is control freak but it appears that her obsessiveness extends beyond the acceptable range of control.
