the true undeniable symptom is a person having two personalities that don't know each other , can't remember what the other personality did etc
but
a perfectly normal person can do this when in a rage .
but
if you find you have already done simple things you intended to do and have no recollection you should seek medical advice Alzheimer's could cause someone to fear they have dual personality disorder .

Multiple Personality Disorder
Alternate Names : Dissociative Identity Disorder, Dual Personality Disorder

Multiple personality disorder is a condition in which two or more distinct identities or personalities alternately take control in the same person. Each personality is unaware of any others.

What is going on in the body?
The symptoms of multiple personality disorder can be sudden, gradual, fleeting, or chronic. Each personality has full range of mental functions. Certain identities may emerge in certain circumstances. The personalities often have different names and characteristics. The personalities may be quite different from the primary one.

What are the causes and risks of the condition?
The cause of multiple personality disorder is thought to be psychological trauma, such as chronic physical abuse or sexual abuse, in childhood. The disorder is more common in females than males.

Try the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), they should be able to give you a good description. A couple of things to keep in mind : 1) Dual/ Multiple personality disorder is NOT the same thing as schizophrenia. 2) This disorder is EXTREMLY rare. 3) When it does occur it is usually a coping mechanism for people who have undergone severe trauma in a situation that they had no other controll over. Hope that helps.

Dual personality is disorder is characterized by the switching of personalities. It means that you have two personalities. It doesn't mean that you are two different people. I assume since you are asking all of these questions it must be for a psychology class. READ YOUR BOOK!!!!! Yes the internet helps but good old reading of you text book is the best way to learn. It means that you can go from one personality to another in a minute no a second. One who had it usually doesn't realize what is occuring and some people have no memory of it at all.

are you talking about what used to be called split personality? i think that is different to a pschzos, who has many different personalities. when someone was described as a split personality, it usually meant that they had 2 completely different personalities which could be manifested within minutes of each other.maybe someone is calm and friendly for one moment and then suddenly go off the rails and rant and rave the next moment. i think they would not be seen in the same light as a pschizo, because something triggers off this opposite behaviour, whether it is something someone said or did.

ofcourse i am only guessing,so don't quote me.
