Find a place (such as Sally's Beauty Supply or Beauty Brands) that sells professional curling irons. I have the same type of hair you described and the only way I can get it to take a curl is to use a curling iron that gets super hot. The gold or ceramic plated ones work well. The curling irons you buy at Wal-mart or Target generally don't get as hot or last as long as the professional ones. But super hot irons on hair cause a lot of damage so don't use everyday.

I have the same problem and I have discovered a triple barrel hair waver iron (works sort of like a crimper or a straightener but it makes deeps waves). I saw the girl from the Real World use it on her thin, straight hair and it made great waves and volume. I haven't gotten a hold of one yet but I have seen them available on the internet. I am going to ask my hair stylist if she can track one down for me.

Wash it and braid it when it is still wet. Maybe add just a bit of gel first and let it dry that way. Take it out and don't brush it, just run your fingers through it a little and then spray some hair spray on it.
