Typically, they do more then one test if the first is positive because sometimes they can be wrong. The sonogram will also show signs if the baby will have downs syndrome, like they will have shorter fingers and limbs. Ask for another test. Good Luck.

The blood tests often give false positives. Not always.

If your blood test was positive and your ultrasound does not show anything, this does not mean anything definitive either. This was my circumstance, and my son WAS born with DS.

The only way to know 100% is to have an amniocentesis done, if you're willing to take the chance of possible miscarriage.

That all being said, DS is NOT always as bad as it seems! My beautiful boy is 3 now and he is the apple of everyone's eye that he meets. He has gifts that we others don't have.

The supposed values of intelligence and beauty in this society and world is atrocious. Period.

Good luck to you in whatever happens, you'll be a great mom no matter what.

The blood test (I assume you mean the triple screen test) is not definitive and it is known to have false positives. An amnio is the only definitive way to tell.

Having said that, as the mom of a 2 year old son with DS, I can tell you that if your child does indeed have DS, once you get over the shock (which is completely natural), you will be amazed at how wonderful our little angels are. It is not as bad as you may think. Sure, they take a little longer to learn some things, but they DO learn them. There can be associated health problems linked to DS...such as a heart defect like my son had, or something called duodenal atresia, but these can almost always be fixed by surgery.

I would like to invite you to go look at www.downsyn.com particularly browse the forum. There you will hear the stories of parents who have been there already and parents who are expecting a child with DS.

I know this is a scary time and I wish you well

I definitely would have another test, like testing the amnoitic fluid around the baby...it is more accurate.

Can I just say, if you are tested again and it does turn out that your baby does have Downs, it is not the end of the world. Of course, there are varying degrees of Downs Sydnrome, and it is totally your choice if you choose to have a termination. It is your body and your life. It would be a very tough decision and is a personal choice.

I work with adults who have downs syndrome, and they are the nicest people to work with. Downs Syndrome people do have health issues...more so than with "normal" babies, but those health issues dont mean the baby will die at an early age. Downs syndrome people are very affectionate and loving, and they can live a whole and productive life. The people I work with have worked for the House with No Steps for the last 30 years...They are happy and may I say, more normal, than a lot of people who claim they are normal.

People's perceptions about people with a disability have changed so much...they are now more accepted in our community. They attend regular school and children these days are coming into contact with people with a disability more often and are becoming more tolerant....although there are exceptions to that rule and children can be nasty to a person who is "different", no matter whether it is colour, disability, or they just dont like the clothes the person is wearing.

If you want to experience real love of a child then a Downs child is the most loving. I know if I was pregnant with a Downs Syndrome Baby, while I know there are tough times ahead re health issues, the rewards far outweigh any of this.

I absolutely love my job. The two people I am talking about are a couple, a man and woman, not married, but they love each other so much...It is so wonderful to see. I come to work and they come rushing up to me and give me huge hugs. They have a wonderful sense of humour and we have so much fun. I have taken them to Karaoke nights and the passion they have is just incredible. Peter, the male, got down on his knees and looked up into his partners eyes and sung to her. I had tears in my eyes it was so beautiful. He didnt know the words to the song, but that was irrelevant, he just got up and sung...He had no inhibitions, just did what he felt was right at the time.

I know this is long winded, but I just wanted you to know my ideas on Downs Syndrome People. They may have Downs, but they are People first, exceptional people in my opinion.

Like I said, it is totally your choice what you want to do if the test proves positive for Downs. I just wanted you to know that having Downs Syndrome baby does not mean your life is going to be fraught with problems. Sure, you are going to have problems, but if you approach these problems with an open mind, you will find that the rewards will be greater than you could ever imagine.

Good luck, it is a tough time for any parent who finds out their child has a disability...I just wanted to let you know the other side of the coin.

a sperm has 23 chromosomes and an egg has 23 chromosomes. together a cell has 46. in the case of downs syndrome trisomy 21. either the sperm or the egg produces an extra 21 chromosome. now the cell has 47 chromosomes. that accounts for the physical and mental characteristics of downs syndrome. relax though if your baby is born with downs syndrome that does not mean that they won't have a successfull life. look at corky. it starts with home training. start young. good luck to you and if you have a special child cherish this because they bring so much love into this world.

I would say that a positive result means that you baby tested positive for down syndrome. Did you have a talk with the doctor about it. I doubt that if it was positive that the doctor wouldn't sit you down and discuss it with you. If he didn't you better find another doctor. Good Luck and God Bless.

I agree, get an amniotic fluid test. Ask your doc to have "Cytogenetic analysis" done. Downs syndrom is caused by an extra chromosome # 21. Cytogenetic testing will look at the chromosomes and can tell exactly if there is an abnormality.

Screen test are not 100% accurate.
Look on Internet about it.
My mom told me to tell you this , i had her write it all down so i can type it , to tell you.
My big brother girlfriend was told that there was a chance she could have a child with DS. My big brother has a sister that has mild mental retardation so i am not sure if that make it higher chance for MR. I am the sister that has mild mental retardation.

Ask for an Amniotic Fluid test AND an Obstetrical Sonogram; these are far more accurate than blood testing alone. I hope that everything turns out okay with further testing.
