...notes found are generally petty and selfish - on the lines of "i told you and you wouldn't listen, now who's laughing?".
Could we be over-estimating the religious nature of suicide bombers? Are they just childishly looking for a way to draw attention to themselves, and using their religion as a way to get it?

My thoughts are that the only reason they do it, is because they receive approval from their peers. If you remove the approval, would they be so willing?

People are talking about honour. Honour is gotten from social reinforcement... which is getting attention for yourself.

Suicide is selfish to everyone around you. Period. The only valid reason is euthenasia.

It's difficult to say. I'm sure many of them are indeed childish, but I also think of people like Japanese Kamikaze pilots in WWII who did it for honorable reasons...

Suicide is not a way to draw attention to yourself. There have been studies that propose that people who commit suicide (not attempt but actually succeed) are often either seemingly lacking in the self-preservation instinct nature instills--or personal grief and pain simply over-rides it. Some studies also point to genetics. Suicide may be a mis-wiring of the brain.
Suicide bombers are a misnomer. I don't care for homocide bombers either..the word is almost redundant and too PC...but either way they do not intend to commit suicide, they intend to commit murder. Their death is just a by-product of murderous intent.
They use religion as a reason to murder others and they don't care if they die as well. So in that respect suicide bombers are selfish and petty....
but suicide notes....they are someone's last thoughts, the last communication with the living. They aren't petty, they are just sad. They deal with everyday life as if the writer still expects to live it, as if they still half hope that what they did will somehow be able to be retracted. Its what people think when they have lost all hope and can't go on anymore.
And sadly, often its as human and as mundane as living. I would never call someone's suicide a selfish petty way to gain attention...

I also have to wonder how many suicide notes you have read. The type of notes you are talking about sound like the words of a teenager not an adult. I would expect a teenager to be childish. Teenagers also tend to be impulsive, and they lash out when they are hurting. The quote you presented is typical of a teenage suicide note. Adults tend to express how sorry they are for causing more pain, and how they could no longer live with the pain they are feeling.
Suicide bombers are taught from a very early age that giving their life for their religious beliefs will guaranteeing them a place in heaven.
You are trying to combine two different ideas that have almost nothing in common. In one case, the suicide is giving up, in the other, the suicide is for honor.
Your friend only reads a limited percentage of suicide notes. In order to make a generalization like you just did, you would need to collect all suicide notes from everyone in order to determine what "most" of them say.
By the way, your friend has no business blabbing about the personal lives of those people he is supposed to be trying to protect and help.

That's an interesting point, but I wonder, how did you come by the knowledge that "nearly all" suicide notes are petty? Is there an archive somewhere?
Based on my experience (limited as it is), I find that most people just can't see another way out, their pain and suffering is too much, and death is the only option (they think).

Suicide is what happens when pain overcomes the ability to cope with the pain.
Physical or Psychological.
I don’t want to sympathize with suicide bombers, but I think that the same might be said for them.

You people just don't get it. This is a desparate act of a people whose very existence is threatened and they have so few ways of fighting back.
I think they believe that they are going to be killed anyway, so why not have the say on when they are going to die? And take some of killers with them?

Martyrs --- they want to be Martyrs.
Historically, we see martyrdom taking place during large separation of classes (Rich are Rich & the poor are poor with little middle class). So 100 BC - 200 AD in Christainity marterdom was revered and those who died for Christanity were deemed "Saints"/ "Marters".
However, "Suicide Bombers" of the "Terrorists" breed are not poor but rather upper-middle class. So, this is boggly into the steriotypical profile of "Suicide Bombers". Even the Japanese in WWII used the poor for the suicide mission. Yes, there are many poor Muslims being coverted to "Terrorists" in countries like Brittian ... but, its the 'Rich' who actually take the suicide jobs. Now they're recruting women (wealthy) for bombings. Funny thing, is I dont' see them getting the "Maryter" status they seek ... guess it's 'cas they're not serving God by Terrorizing!
Here's a brief account of Christian Martyrdom to allow you to compair for yourselves:
" 2473 Martyrdom is the supreme witness given to the truth of the faith: it means bearing witness even unto death. The martyr bears witness to Christ who died and rose, to whom he is united by charity. He bears witness to the truth of the faith and of Christian doctrine. He endures death through an act of fortitude. "Let me become the food of the beasts, through whom it will be given me to reach God."
2474 The Church has painstakingly collected the records of those who persevered to the end in witnessing to their faith. These are the acts of the Martyrs. They form the archives of truth written in letters of blood:
Neither the pleasures of the world nor the kingdoms of this age will be of any use to me. It is better for me to die [in order to unite myself] to Christ Jesus than to reign over the ends of the earth. I seek him who died for us; I desire him who rose for us. My birth is approaching. . .
I bless you for having judged me worthy from this day and this hour to be counted among your martyrs. . . . You have kept your promise, God of faithfulness and truth. For this reason and for everything, I praise you, I bless you, I glorify you through the eternal and heavenly High Priest, Jesus Christ, your beloved Son. Through him, who is with you and the Holy Spirit, may glory be given to you, now and in the ages to come. Amen. "
It could also be said that Martyters are victims of "Terrorists" who kept their faith amist the torture. I'm sure there are many silent Martyers who died on 9-11. May they rest in peace.
