It's possible my female shepherd might be preganant. I understand that her charecteristics might change. Is it necessary to seperate her from the sire. He is a whimp of a dog compared to her. She is the more aggressive of the two. Also, is ther eanything I need to worry about when it comes to handeling the puppies....."mother's protection" thing. Any other information will be greatful. Thank you.

You most definitely need to keep him out of the room you put her whelping box in and you need to keep him out once the puppies are born. She's going to be very protective of her puppies for the first several weeks.

Introduce her to her whelping box about a week before she's due so she can start nesting and get comfortable in there. She'll know when she needs to go in there.

As far as handling them, when she goes into labour you need to stay close by in case she needs or wants help. ( I had one female who actually stopped her contractions and waited in the doorway if I left the room for a minute.) Your dog will give you cues - some want your help looking after the puppies, others don't. You can make sure the puppies are breathing well, she might want you to help dry them, too, but never try to take them out of her reach. Moms like to eat the placenta and that's good, but you might want to limit her to 1 or 2 or she'll get the runs. I also liked to cut and tie the cords myself because sometimes the moms are too rough and can cause a hernia.

I would move the sir when the pups are born and do not handle the pups at a early stage becuz sometimes if the humane scent will cause the mother to hurt her own pups also a mother will abandon a pup if there is something wrong with it so you need to make sure she is attending to all the pups good luck I love GS I rescued 3 so far they are great

dont let the sire near momma dog from the day she starts whelping till the pups are 4 weeks old or so. you can tell if mom or dad is angry just pay attention . dont let anyone handle the pups till the belly buttons heal (after the first week)you need to be able to "help" so wash your hands and roll up your sleeves. read up on whelping in case she needs you. and enjoy the trip. :)

Ask your vet. I would say seperate the two when she is close to delivery. That would be 63 days post breeding
