Golden Retriever --Hands down best dog breed ever. And you can usually find great mutts at the animal shelter.

You can get a golden retriever like you said, or even a black lab. also if you don't want to stick with pure bred type dogs, you can always look for a proper sized mutt at the ASCPA.
There was a guy on here touting the Coltriever. I read up on them, and they seem perfect for what you want. Check out this web site, and google them it you want.

If you want a placid, quiet, non-drooling dog I recommend you adopt a retired Greyhound. They are not hyper, nor do they need to run. They are sweet-tempered house dogs. They do not shed a lot like a retriever will...and depending on personality they are the greatest. I have two and they are the best dogs I have ever had!

I was going to suggest Golden Retriever since they're really nice & fun. But, if not, you may want to try a golden labrador.

Sounds like you want a golden retriever :0)
Another possibility is a labrador retriever, golden labrador retriever, weimeraner, and husky.
Another suggestion, although it gets quite a bit bigger, is a bullmastiff.

Get a Vizsla. Red/gold in coat and eyes. Very short hair so most of the grooming issues are gone.
Be prepared to deal with a dog that does have energy, wants to be first in and out of the door. The two I've had both liked to step on your foot and lean against you. I've heard that their nickname is Velcro Dogs.

How about a Greyhound, they are very gentle and good natured, and they don't need a lot of excercise, two half hour walks a day -- the rest of the day they're spark out on their back with four paws in the air -- I've re-homed five -- they get destroyed at the end of there racing career, and it's not fair.

Hey Amy R, you're right. How about a German Shorthair Pointer. I have 3 and love each one of them. They are good home dogs, protective (to a certain degree), weigh (females) 40-50lbs (males) 60-75 lbs, good with children, don't require a lot of grooming and very trainable.
Good luck.
