how far in advance of a july 2007 flight to Hawaii should or could I make reservations? I am going to guess that the cost will go up by then but how can I get the best deal?

You can book a flight now - I believe one year in advance but do check with the airline you want to use.
Also, after you book, keep checking the airline's website to see if the rate has gone down - I've done this in the past especially about a month before my trip and have negotiated with the airline and got my fare reduced - they may charge for this but if it's a substantial reduction minus the fee it good be a good deal.

The sooner you book your tickets the better. It's very rare that costs will go down as departure approaches.
