"This is not the ultimate hell (Greek: gehenna) referred to in Matthew 10:28, the same as the "lake of fire" (Revelation 20:15). Hades is another compartment in the pit... where the spirits of the unsaved dead are confined until the day of judgment. They were not set free when Christ freed the spirits of the faithful, but are still there" (Dr. Henry M. Morris, The Defenders Study Bible)."

Hades is like a holding cell for people who die and are "not" a christian. They wait in hades until the "final" day of judgment. The day when Christ comes back for His bride, The Church and the day that all those who chose not to obey the 1 true gospel and remain faithful, will be cast into hell eternally! Read Luke 16:19-31, 2 Peter 3:7, and Hebrew 9:27 for a better understanding. On that day every eye shall see!!

Hades is merely a place of the dead, from Greek mythology, although it's mentioned in the New Testament. I think the Hebrew Old Testament equivalent is Sheol.

Hell is a place of torment reserved for Satan and his angels, but those who don't repent and turn to Jesus Christ for forgiveness and salvation will end up in Hell.

Since heaven was closed before Jesus' crucifixion, all the dead ended up in Sheol, or Hades. Those destined for heaven were in Abraham's Bosom, or Paradise. After Jesus' crucifixion paid the sin penalty, the folks in Paradise were admitted to Heaven.

At least that's how I understand it.

Jesus told the thief on the cross who believed in him, "Today you shall be with me in Paradise."

Hades is the place where the souls of those who died before Jesus died on the cross went at death. It consisted of two parts, Paradise and Sheol. Those who believed by faith went to paradise and the others to Sheol. After His death Jesus took all those in Paradise to be with Him in Heaven. The rest stayed in Sheol which is where unbeliever still go today. At the Judgment they will be judged and then sent to Hell. Hell is not in use yet, and maybe not even in existence yet, but will be used after the Great White Throne judgment.

In Christianity, Hell is where you are condemned to eternal fire and damnation. Hades in Greco/Roman mythology was a different place - the underworld, where you go when you die but there were sections of it depending on how you lived and what you were deserving of. There was even a section for those who were blessed called Elysium.

All the dead went to hades, whether they were good or bad. The punishments and rewards were given accordingly. There were three judges aecus, minos and rhadamanthus who judged each soul...

If you were above average or a hero you went to the elysian fields
If you were judged evil you went to tartarus
and if you were average you became a shade that wandered around the feilds of asphodel.
