Pontius Pilate, procurator of Judaea, incurred the enmity of Jews by insulting their religious sensibilties when he had coins bearing pagan religious symbols minted. The Jews may have capitalized on his vulnerability by obtaining a legal death sentence on Jesus. Following the advice of the high priest Caiaphas, Pontius Pilate, ordered the crucifixion of Jesus in Jerusalem. A few years later Pilate was ordered back to Rome to stand trial on the charge that he executed men without proper trial. Pilate may have killed himself on orders from Emperor Caligula.

Pontius Pilate
(pŏn´shs pī´lt) , Roman prefect of Judaea ( 26—36?). He was supposedly a ruthless governor, and he was removed at the complaint of Samaritans, among whom he engineered a massacre. His attempt to evade responsibility in the trial of Jesus was caused by his fear of the high priests' power and his difficult responsibility for the peace of Palestine. According to tradition he committed suicide at Rome.

Pilate was recalled to Rome sometime after the crucifixion of Jesus, though the reasons for the recall are disputed. In any case, he disappeared from recorded history at that point, though there are some legends that say he and his wife converted to Christianity. No one knows how or exactly when he died or even what his praenomen (first name) was.

According to wikipedia it is in 36 AD that pontius used arrests and executions to quell what he may have interpreted as an uprising, and that after complaints to the Roman legate of syria he was recalled to Rome where he disappears from the historical record, and that the legend of his suicide is derived from no known historical record.

After being banished to Gaul, he committed suicide, which was common for disgraced officials in the day. Had he not, he would have been arrested, and tortured before being crucified. So he took the more painless way out.

Pontius Pilate can't die because it is not a living thing.
Pontius Pilate is a place not a living thing. Pontius Pilate is a place where Jesus was to be executed on the cross he was hung on.
