fish should not smell "fishy", "smelly", or have any off odors, these are tell tale signs that the fish is NOT fresh and /or has not been handled or stored properly.

Salt water fish should smell briny like the ocean they came from have nice red or maroon gills, nice round eyes not sagging in to the head, skin should spring back when pressed with your finger.

Pretty much the same thing with fresh water fish except it won't smell like the ocean but it should still not have a "fishy" smell.

Cod and Halibut will have less of that heavy fish taste as well as light in smell.

However if you are experiencing these that means the fish is not fresh or at its freshest when you purchased it. Ask were the product came from and when it was caught. If it was previously frozen try to find out the pack date and origin of the product.

Enjoy!

Fluke, Flounder, Sole, any of the "Flatties", a nutty flavor that is very delicate, not fishy, most people that don't like seafood, had it poorly prepared the first time they experienced it. FRESH fish fillet should curl up when you put it in the pan and cook it, if it lies there like a brick, it's frozen, stay away from "Blue fish, Tuna, Cod, very oily and fishy, try to stay with the fresh catch of the day, depending on your geographic location.

Orange Roughy is a good one....and is usually readily available at your grocery store. Also, Mahi is fairly tame. Throw some seasoning or marinade either of those and you can barely taste fish.

I, however, detest any and all fish....I love shellfish....just can't handle the kind that swim around....I think it's the combination of the smell, taste, and also texture....like you said.

If it were me....I would just stick to chicken.

If you can get ahold of Sturgen, it is the best fish out there. It tastes just like chicken. We like to roll it in ritz crackers and egg and fry it. It is out of this world. You cant get better tastin fish.

Try soaking fish in milk, then season with lemon pepper, it will take the smell away, and leave a nice tasty fish.

I cant stand a heavy fish [oilly] taste either. On the gulf coast three fish come to mind that would suit your fancy . The ling cobia, the trigger fish, and mahi-mahi, are what you are looking for, good seafood markets should have them. you will like them ...!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Any farm raised fish, such as salmon or catfish, will give you less odor and flavor than wild or wild caught.
