After a puppy's initial shot, vets commonly give the 3 year rabies vaccine now. If you don't know if he's ever had a shot, you should check with your vet. Too many vaccinations are dangerous - I had a dog die because he got auto immune disease from his annual shots.

If you don't have proof of him having a Rabies shot, you are legally required to get him one. It won't hurt him to have another one. They should get their first one at 4 months, then booster a year later. Depending on the law where you live, they need it either yearly or every 3 years after that. If you know the previous owner, or what vet he's been to, they may be able to give you that info. If you've had him the whole time, contact the vets you've had him to. If you got him from a rescue, they'll tell you if he got one while there.

You can go ahead and give him one, if he's had one recently it's not going to hurt him to be re-vaccinated. Dogs should receive vaccines starting with 6 weeks of age and re-vaccinated at least twice until they are 14-16 weeks, when they usually get their first rabies vaccine. After that they need yearly boosters of both rabies vaccine and a distemper/parvo vaccine, most commonly referred to as a 5-way vaccine. (also vaccinates against hepatitis, leptosporosis, and parainfluenza). Your vet will know what you mean. Also imortant, have him checked for heartworms and put on a preventative! Better to spend the money now than wait until he had to have $200 + treatments for heartworm.

Over vaccinating is causing all kinds of health problems in our dogs. The vaccine itself is good for at least 7 yrs, but state laws require that it be done more often than that.
I just read a study on the net that said that 7 out of 10 cancerous tumors studied, showed the DNA markers of the Rabies vaccine.

Yes. They need one rabies shot per year, and the first time they get a booster. If you got him from a pound, he should have all his shots.
It's a good idea to get him a complete physical, since he's new.
Have fun with him!

It will do him no harm to have a shot now even if he has received one last week. Shelters vaccinate all the time without knowing a vaccination history. Nothing to worry about, just vaccinate him.
Good Luck and I hope I helped

Usually it is recommended every year on the anniverserary. There are 3 year shots, but not sure many vets use them or if city laws recognizes them. I dont' think it will hurt to have him done. Most of your shelters, when taking in animals will vaccinate them as if they have never had their shots regardless of age.

1-3 years, depending on the state you are in. If you don't know if he has had one, legally, you will need to get him one. Best if you can find out if he has, it would be hard on him to get 2 close together.
