Scary. In L.A. County, they took me into the processing area, filled with all kinds of people, mostly gang members and drug addicts. They made me strip naked in front of hundreds of people, then sent me to a dorm (the Gay section) with 120 other guys. The guards are terrifying, and they'll beat the crap out of you if they want. They also allow hardened criminals to mix with the non-violent inmates (like me) as a form of intimidation. They will also keep you for a number of days longer than your sentance just to get more Federal money. Jails are paid between $100 and $200 per night per inmate by the Feds, to make it look as if crime is rampant but being controlled. Eventually, they'll release you, usually at midnight.

Jail is terrible. I spent about 12 hours in a holding cell after being arrested for a terribly old charge of providing alcohol to a minor. As my husband was being arrested at the same time, and men are absolutely not allowed in the women's portion, to speed the process we were both booked in in front of the men's holding cell. In the cell was a man with private parts exposed, enjoying himself as there was a woman present (the most polite way I can phrase this). Also, throughout the day, I was treated to a variety of unsavory guests in the cell - a girl who was over 8 months pregnant in on drug charges, as well as her mother, who was pretending not to be her mother so they wouldn't get separated, and a girl in on a traffic violation who proceeded to say some of the worst things I've ever heard in my life to her grandmother on the phone because her grandmother didn't have the money to pay the fine. Everyone was rude to the jailer and they seemed to get what they wanted much faster - the jailers seemed so much more accustomed to this way of doing things, while I said please and thank you in hopes of making the stay as bearable as possible when I needed something. The toilet was in the open cell where anyone could see, and at the back where a tank would normally be was the only water fountain (and they only brought meager 6-ounce drinks with the meals, which were terribly nasty. I promise, it's something to be avoided at all costs.

I have worked in corrections for over 6 years and I can tell you jail/prison sucks. The only people who seem to like it are the homeless, who often commit crimes to keep coming back to have a roof over their head. You have little to no freedoms. You still have constitutional rights, but very few privelages and they can be taken away. Imagine being locked in a 6x8 cell for 23 hours a day. If you are lucky and depending on the facility where you are incarcerated you might have the privelage of having a television. The food sucks!!! It is cooked by other inmates who dont care what it taste like. I worked in food service for 2 years at one unit I worked at and I will NEVER eat prison food. I saw some really disgusting things. Some people will want to fight with you just because you look at them wrong. Overall jail sucks and I dont recommend it to anybody.
