It's hard because so many of us are caught up in self-gratification.

Based off the Book, "Healing the Culture: A Commonsense Philosophy of Happiness, Freedom, and the Life Issues" by R.J. Spitzer S.J. Phd.

"Four Levels of Happiness:

Level 1: Immediate Gratification. Objective is to Maximize pleasure and minimize pain. Characteristics: Obligation is to self alone. No desire for common, intrinsic, or ultimate good. Lack of self worth, fear of tangible loss/harm, boredom. Gratification sought is immediate.

Level 2: Personal Achievement/ Ego. Objective: Ego centeredness, be better than, gain advantage. Characteristics: Promotion of self is primary; personal power and control are key. Jealousy, fear of failure, contempt, isolation, loneliness, and cynicism. Gratification sought is short - term.

Level 3: Good Beyond Self. Objective: Do good beyond self. Characteristics: Principles inclued justice, love (charity), and community. Intrinsic goodness is an end in itself. Decisions are focused onthe greater good. Gratification sought: Long-term.

Level 4: Ultimate Good. Objective: Participate in giving and receiving ultimate meaning, goodness, ideals, and love. Characteristics: Good is ultimate, Principals include ultimate Truth, Love, Justice, and Beauty. Gratification sought is eternal.

Majority of society is Level 1 & 2 ... a few in 3 ... very few in Level 4(Saints). Love is simply Charity ... "Totus Tutos" ... We need to learn to slowly give up our needs for others. You can start in places like with your family & friends. Practice giving them stuff you want for your own gratification. Small steps, then bigger ones. When you fall down, learn, and keep trying to strech into the next level. The book I mentioned is a great guide and learning tool, even though it focus' on birth & death ... it has lots to teach about all inbetween.
