Well, it depends on the guy. If you really want him to sit next to you, there are three things you can do: Star sitting closer and closer to him; hint a little bit more; or, the way that is, I'm sorry, very obvious, just sit next to him yoursel.
It may sound dumb, but if you really like this guy, and want to sit next to him with all your heart, then go for it. Follow your heart when it comes to love, not your head. The heart isn't the one confused.
If the problem persists, then try something else. If you want something, the believe in it and don't stop till you succed.

Tell him to come try some of you cake or whatever you are eating for lunch. Or eat somthing that looks and smells really good and if hes a hungry boy he will ask for some and come sit next to you. Or start talking to him about your friend or somthing and keep saying WHAT..PARDON like you cant hear what hes saying and maybe if hes really into what your talking about he will come closer and sit next to you ; )
thats the only way i can think of besides you asking him straight out to sit there or just you sitting next to him.

You know there's no other way to go about this, Just go and sit next to him and start talking to him and smile a lot, He'll be flattered. Trust me, You need to be the one that makes the move

it helps if you are friends with the people he sits with say i need a change and sit next to him. talk to him and everyone else at the table so it doesnt look like your just here to be with him. hopefully he will be interested enough and will come over to you the next day.

see were he sits, if he sits in the same place, at the same table get there before he does. have 2 friends around but don't talk to them and just let them talk to eachother, make sure your sitting in the middle, and smile at him
