My brother used to do that when I was growing up. He just couldn't breathe very well. Me and my sisters would get after him everyday, but to this day, he still eats like that.

Now, my son does it too. I can't eat with him sometimes. I don't know if there is any hope for you.

Dear robert w,
as listed above, that could quite be a possible case. As well as this, sometimes it is just the way five year olds act. I remember I didn't know how to chew without my mouth open until I was about 4! Sometimes it's just behavioral. He/she is five, I wouldn't say it's too big of a problem. Just keep up, take note and take notice.

Probably picked it up from some kid at school he/she saw doing the same thing. Saw it got a rise out of the teacher or thought it was funny and has now taken home to irritate you with. My daughter does stuff like this all the time. The wonderful things they pick up from school... only thing I can say is stand your ground and let your child know you are not going to put up with that kind of behavior at the table. That they know better than to eat like that, that it is rude, disgusting, irritating and disrespectful. If they continue try making them eat away from you at the table. Maybe set up a little table in a corner of the litchen for them to sit & eat at and tell him/her that if they continue it they will have to eat away from the table like a dog or cat would... I had to do that with my daughter a few times cause she wanted to keep chewing her food like a cow cause she saw a kid at school do it & thought it was funny...

He's a boy and boys are pigs, they become men and men are pigs! I'm thinking of the TV show Home Improvement!

If it makes you feel any better, my grandson is almost 8 and his table manners are etrocious. Does your child spill his drink at every meal also? You are in good shape if he doesn't.

Did you ever teach him how to chew properly? Maybe you chew like that also, and that't where he is getting it from.
