This usually happens when a cat is that old, he's probably going to pass away soon. I know you don't want to hear that but that's what it seems like. That's the price you have to pay for getting attached to a cat =(

Of course, the best answer is to take him to your vet if your that worried about him. Hurry before it's too late!

I'm guessing these are medicines the vet put him on. He is getting pretty old for a cat. There is the chance he will be ok, but the vet should really take a look at him if there have been any changes. Taking a lot of medicine doesn't necessarily mean bad news...but it's not really a good thing either. There's probably something serious that the medicines are treating, or they're to fight the old age issues. I hope he'll be fine.

Honey, 16 is pretty elderly for a cat. What kinds of medicine does he take? He may have a disease that causes weight loss. Your vet will be best able to tell you because of the medicine s/he has prescribed. If you are underage, discuss what's happening with your parents, and maybe you can all go to the vet with your kitty and have him explain why he's losing weight.

Your cat must have been well cared for all of these years to have lived so long. Treasure him for as long as you can and keep your special memories.

Good luck & hope all is well for your kitty!

Is your cat taking medication for hyperthyroidism, that's very common in older cats causing them to eat a lot and still lose weight? The medications should be correcting this situation though.

I have a 22 yr old cat who takes only a dropperful of herbal tincture in her meals, morning and night. She is very arthritic and I am going to be trying a homeopathic remedy (Rhus tocicodendron) to see if that will help. She also tends to be somewhat constipated and I am going to start using Capra Mineral Whey in her food to see if it will soften her stools and enable her to go more frequently.

Cameo is having a wonderful life. She enjoys her food, pees profusely in her litterbox and drinks tons of water to cleanse her failing kidneys. She recently had her teeth cleaned and had no problem with the anesthesia. She is stone deaf. She comes on my bed each night (I bought special stairs for her a year ago) and loves to have under-the-chin rubs and ear skritches.

She toodles around the garden daily and loves to lie in the soft morning sun and the decks that are still warm from the sun. She is regal, feisty and a phenomenon because of her advanced age and good health.

I hope your kitty can continue in good health and that the medicines will correct what is ailing him. I lost a 12 yr old cat to cancer so one can never know when the end will come for our cats. Bless him and you.

Are you using a good cat food. A lot of problems can be resolved by using a premium feed. Hills Science Diet is the best. While its expensive, you only give them a small portion each day, while other cat foods you have to over fill the bowl. I know a friend of mine, her cats would upcuck a lot, she tried many different foods, after one weed on science diet her cats stoped.
Just something to think about

What meds is he taking? Unfortunately, it sounds like you cat is very sick and might not make it. You should take him to the vet and see what's going on unless you already know and if the cats in pain maybe the best thing to do is euthanize him so he will not suffer-if he's not in pain make his last days/weeks happy. Does he feel brittle and boney when you pick him up? All in all, I do hope you cat is o.k. but it doesn't sound like it.

First of all consider his age, for a cat he is really old, so it is natural for his health to deteriorate, having said the ugly part, I should also tell you to take him to the vet immediately and have him checked for any disease, Sometimes older cats loose their teeth and have difficulty eating hard foods, you should also check to see if his teeth are there, it sounds cruel or funny but this might be why he is getting skinny.
I'm sure if you get him checked he will be alright.

Your cat is very old, and you are a lucky girl to have him but I am afraid that he is getting ready to move on to his next life and you should prepare your self for this as it can be very hard to deal with.

For your sake and the cats I hope that he will be OK .

My thoughts are with you and your cat at this time.

GOOD LUCK with him.
