I think that must mean he likes to try to escape. This is a bird we're talking about so just go get his wings clipped and make sure you keep up with that because they will grow back and away he goes!

A 'runner' parakeet, also called a creeper is a bird from an aviary that has, due to some genetic defect, never gained the capability of flight. The usually survive well on the floor of large aviaries, since there are no predators, and food fallen from the feeders is plentiful. They climb the wire and perch with the other birds frequently, but fall to the floor when they attempt to fly. They get on well as pet birds, since small cages restrict flight anyway.

Runners are animals that like wide open spaces they can run in. If you live in an apartment, this can be a problem. Take your new budgie to a park where they can be let off the leash and run around, or make sure your yard is clear of debris so they can have plenty of play space.

Perhaps the Budgie is the "Runt". Is the bird smaller than its clutch mates?
The only thing I can think of is that the person who gave it to you meant that the bird was "Runted", or smaller than the rest of the clutch.
Maybe that's what was meant and you simply didn't hear correctly.
I hope this helps.

NEVER have a pet bird with out clipping the wings. This is not cruel. It will prevent the bird from flying into walls, mirrors and out an open door or window.A domestic bird out doors will not survive very long. They can still flutter to the ground, but will not be able to get lift to fly away.I have 2 cockatiels that both have their wings clipped and thay are two of the most spoiled and happy birds alive.Besides making them safe, they rely on you to get them around on your shoulder,so they make better more friendly, loving birds.Good Luck

I haved own parakeets for years and never heard of a runner. I looked it up and there is no such thing. Maybe you misunderstood . Why not ask the person who gave it to you?
