When we go out with a group of friends, alot of the time the women will sit at one end and the men at the other.

Its a good idea if the boys and girls tend to congregate instead of talking with eachother.

Not necessarily. I think you should try to place closer friends together - sometimes that will be boy-girl, and sometimes it will be boy-boy or girl-girl - just don't put strangers or enemies side by side.

I like that arrangement, but it's not really a rule. I think it's nice, and many people will do it automatically, but it's best to just go with the flow and not be fussy about it.

Shrug, my friends have always done it semispontaneously. Couples together is about the only hard and fast rule (and sometimes, I get the feeling they wish they weren't sat together), everything else goes as it goes.

It depends on the age of the people involved. Unless there's some specific problem why not?

I don't think it matters. If its two couples, then you are correct, but sometimes even then, sometimes the guys like to talk about football while the girls discuss quilting or whatever.
