How do you fix this? I hear it is the horizontal control module thingy and is supposed to be a heatsink like device. I want to resodder it to get the TV working but don't know what the unit is. The TV is a JVC C-20WL5 US2 version.

The TV picture is very nice looking when it works. It works once it first starts then flickers and turns into a line. You hit it on the side and then it works for a few seconds. Audio is fine.

Pictures of the board:

Can someone point on the thing I need to sodder??

LOL marvin you need to let somone who knows what they are doing answer this question. What is happening is the solder connections the the vertical output I.C are cracked do to heat and age. when you smack your set you move those connections a little bit, just enough to make connection again. if this goes on for too long you will burn out that I.C all you need to do is find the vertical I.C and resolder the connections on the bottom of the board. If you are not comfertable with it then let a TV tech do it. In thos pics of yours, if you look at the pic that large black ribbed heatsink on the left, that should have the I.C attached to it. solder those connections and most of them around it and you should be in business

The photos are not very good and there seems to be a little confusion as to which is the vertical chip, Kc is probably correct but If I were you I would look carefully at all the chips that have a heat sink attached , the audio out chip will also look very similar , If you can follow the wires from the deflection yoke on the tube neck you will see that they end in a plug on the main board , it will have 4 wires , 2 of them spaced apart and the other 2 closer together , look under the circuit board and follow the 2 wires that are closest together , they will take you to the vert chip !! Good luck !!

Actually the horizontal control circuit is working fine. The problem is with the vertical control, it fails after warming up. This causes the entire picture to collapse into one single horizontal line across the center of the picture tube. This line will be very bright and will permanently burn a line across the screen. It is impossible to say here what exactly might be the problem. I suspect that some component is getting very hot and shuts off. You may be able to find the hot component but this may not actually be the cause of the problem. If you are not knowledgeable in electronics and TV circuits your chances of fixing it are very slim. Take it to a TV repair shop or just buy another one at Walmart. 20 inch TV are about $100.

looks to me like you have a dry joint in there somewhere-check all the components on the board for looseness also check the condition of the solder joints on the board-pay particular attention to any joints that look duller than the others-this is where the problem might lie.
