All the plates for all the states are the same size & fit up to 7 letters or numbers. You can call the DMV to see if the letters &/or numbers combo that you're requesting are already taken or not & they can also advise you as to other plate designs available as well as pricing

I think for all plates it's about 6 or 7 letters maybe. 8 at the most.

On the ND department of transportation website, you can enter your personalized plate to see if anyone already has it registered. Here's the page:

Make sure to choose your plate style before searching.
