I started riding after a 25 year layoff 2.5 years ago. Honestly it was a struggle getting up my hill of a driveway and go 1 mile. Every day I rode a little further. Now, 40 lbs lighter, I ride 2-400 miles per week. I ride several 50 mile charity rides a year. All on my comfort bike. Health and stress relief are my main reasons for riding, then recreation. Next year I hope to do a bike tour in Europe with the Mrs. The whole family has gotten into it now.
I am only 50, but it blows my mind when 70 year olds and up (males and females) blow by me on charity rides like i am standing still after 40 miles. What an inspiration to work harder! I still can't catch them. It sure is a good feeling when I blow by the younger guys on the trail and not breaking a sweat like they are. Truly a sport for all ages. All I want for XMAS is a new road bike!

Just learned to bike for the very first time last year at age 35 (though it was my dream since I was 7). Now I just can't stop riding!
It is so much fun and a good cardio exercise. I also go for a ride when I am stressed or feeling sad. Nothing beats riding through the woods to sit by the creek or lake.

My answer is simple "Who wants to pay $ 3.00+ for a gallon of gasoline and pay some terrorist that blows up airplanes for political beliefs?" I ride because the automobile industry has brainwashed us into believing that everyone must drive a car to survive in today's world. Well that's a load of crap most of the free world rides bicycles everyday to go work, save money, and reduce traffic which clogs our roads to day. Exercise is a side benefit sure but have you seen the drivers today everything is rush rush rush. Why? Here in Ohio we going to have a statewide unified law regarding cycling as legal form of transportation on the road. So ride a bike and don't pay BP a penny.

I have done it since my teens, 19 years. I did it back then because I found myself good at it. It was the only sport that a gangly white kid in south Florida could compete at. I was a good sprinter but would get my but kicked in track and got whooped by the distance runners. I just seemed to do well at it.
All this time it has been for the competition, but now, I'm faced with turning thirty-five and don't know if I want to be or can be competitive for much longer. With that I don't know if I'll love it as much. I hope so since it has been such a big part of my life.
Interesting.

I ride my bicycle primarily for transportation - commuting, dropping the kids off at school, grocery shopping, etc. I enjoy the feeling of being out in the open and the opportunity to squeeze in a little workout in day-to-day activities. I also like the challenges that it brings (like carrying 3 kids grocery shopping - or getting to work in a blizzard.) And it provides some justification for my GPS toys.
