If I am not mistaken, a mini-30 is a 7.62x39mm round.

I am not aware of any state where this does not meet minimum requirements, but I would still check the state's hunting regulations. If you check on the states Department of Natural Resources web page, they usually have them online.

The 7.62x39mm wouldn't be my first choice for a deer round, but it is definately adequate. As with any cartridge, just make sure you have a decent shot before taking it.

In terms of a good shotgun round for deer hunting. Personally, I have a Remington 870 Magnum 12 ga with a rifled deer barrel. I use Winchester Supreme Platinum Gold Sabot slugs (about $2+ a shot). Very accurate.

I'd recommend a 20 ga or higher. Some states mandate a 12 ga or a 16 ga when hunting deer, so once again check the regulations. If you are going to use the shotgun for deer quite often, I'd recommend investing in a rifled barrel for deer hunting. If you are just buying one, both Remington and Mossberg offer 12 ga. combo shotguns that come with both a bird barrel and a rifled barrel. I think both run about $300.

Happy hunting!

It's a .308 or 7.62mm, so it is powerful enough in any state. It's close to venerable .30-30 in power. If you use a shotgun, buckshot or slugs are best. A 12 gauge is recommended, but a 16 might do. Don't try any smaller calibers at longer ranges. I'd go for a 12 gauge slug. Test several if possible . Each gun is different.

Yes,
Considered along the same lines as a 30-30,the 7.62X39mm
is legal for deer here in Ca.
(good out to 150 yards or so)

I also use a rifled slug barrel for my 870,with "rotweil breneke" slugs
(RWS)

Unfortunately, Garrett is mistaken in that the Mini-30 fires a .308. The actual cartidge is a Russian 7.62x39 -- whilst a .308/7.62 NATO is 7.62x51. Quite different, and definitely not the same - it would be dangerous to try to use them interchangably.

the 7.62x39 passes here in Washington. its about 100fps slower then the 30-30. it will be fine at closer ranges.
