I actually just read an article about this because so many people have been whining and coming up with retarded conspiracy theories. I included a web address that explains that at the time NORAD had to be contacted directly by the FAA and be told about the hijacking. Popular Mechanics is the source they actually wrote abook called 9/11:Debunking the Myths, I suggest reading the whole article in the web address I included because it silences a lot of the stupid crap people have been spreading.

No it is not a good question. NORAD's job is to look for outside threats. It is the job of the FAA to monitor internal airspace and alert the military of hijacked flights, which is what they did in the proper manner. The problem was that intelligence failures caused the country to be on such a low alert level that there weren't enough fighters in the skies to respond.

not to be rude, but have you ever served in the military? NORAD was not responsible for tracking those flights (although they had the capability), the FAA was. NORADs job is to track incoming missiles and fighters/bombers in formations, and scramble fighters when such targets present themselves. Fighters were scrambled after the fact, but those who serve know that there is an incredible amount of bureucratic red tape that had to be cut to get that going

They dropped the ball, with so many commercial airlines in the air, there was no way to make heads or tails with what the FAA was trying to tell them. They did scramble a couple jets out of Boston, but they had no orders to take anyone out. Two were scrambled out of Elmindorf in AK, they escorted a Korean airliner to Canadian airfield, but other than that, they blew it. Now, theres a better a system in place, via the communications with the FAA.

NORAD was doing their job. They were watching the skies for incoming hostiles. They were scrambled too late once the hijackings were realized. Don't blame them. They were trained to watch for things coming from outside the US not inside.

They were caught off guard and when they did get in the air they were out over the Atlantic and were not told what targets they were looking for. It is all in the 9/11 Commission Report.

what most of u idiots failed to mentioned is that once NORAD is contacted and told that we are under attack..it is their job to defend our airspace...and they did not ******* do that.
They let down BIG TIME...and it can't be said that it was just incompetence. Incompetence doesn't schedule about 3+ war games in one day....google War games scheduled on 9-11.
