What kind of map? On a political map, the colours may just show each different country. That's why the US and Panama might be the same colour. If you aren't sure what your map's colours are, look for the "key" to see if they give any explanations. Sigh.

Here is a clue for you.

Somewhere, usually along the bottom, but! ...you'll find what is usually called 'a Key.' There you will find the same colours with information alongside each colour as to what it represents.

However, depending upon the map (its size and reason for it being printed) it might well be that each country is coloured differently so that the user will be able to see the shape, size etc of the countries it shows there-on.

Ok?

Now no more clues.

Sash.

The colours used to denote which countries in the world were either colonised or under a specific countries rule, ie Great Britain used to be Pink, meaning under British Rule. this however has been replaced with a colour scheme that has no bearing on the countries they refer to.

On a political map? Absolutely nothing, it's just to make it easier to distinguish the borders for any one country.

I've included a link to an example, is that the kind of thing you mean?

Depends on map... could be temperature / height. i.e. north pole, south pole colour = white.

For oceans, the deeper the water the deeper colour it is.
