Most states allow you a 31 day window to get a license if you are going to be permanently residing there past those 31 days, however there are exceptions if you are in the military, or the dependent of someone in the military, otherwise, if you are going to be visiting for less than a month, you should just carry your home driver's license, if you'll be staying longer, you may want to check with the California Department of Public Safety, or Department of Motor Vehicles to be sure.....

if you have a foreign driver's license and you are only here as a visitor, you don't need one.
if you have a visa to stay here for a long period of time you do need one.
if your foreign driver's license is not written in english, you should consider getting an international driver's license from the internet, which does not replace your foreign driver's license but can be used with it to provide an official translation.
some sites charge a lot of money for an international driver's license, i would not pay lots of money for this, however. any one would do, and if yours has english on it, i wouldn't bother.
if you plan to rent a car while here, you should check with the car rental company by asking through their website.
some states will recognize foreign licenses and exchange them for their own licenses but this is limited mostly to european countries and if you need to get a license, be prepared to go through the whole process, including a written and a road test.
most states will also check your passport to make sure you are here legally, although not all states do this at the present time.
every state has a website for their department of motor vehicles and i suggest you look up the one for california and read for yourself. good luck.

No. You can not get one unless you live here anyway. Most United Nations member countries have agreements to honor each others drivers licenses for short periods of time. Check with whatever organization issued you your license. (your own countries motor vehicle department). You will also need an "International Driving Permit" which is just a document that translates your own license into multiple languages so the local authorities can read it. Again, check with your own motor vehicle department on where to get one. DO NOT get one online. They all sell "International Drivers License's" and none of them are legal for use in the US.

If you want to drive in California, the driver's license in your current state is fine for visiting. You have to have a driver's license from one of the states to drive. If you have a driver's license from another country... call a travel agency in your area, they should have that sort of information, and they will give it to you if you at least pretend to be a possible customer.

i don't be attentive to the precise rules in California, yet right here in Georgia a worldwide driving force's License is barely valid whilst accompanied via a license from a distant places united states of america AND an good documentation (generally in a 5-6 internet site ebook variety......the size of a passport) from the host united states of america that states you have a license, dated, signed and so on. the reason it relatively is carried out is with the help of the fact distant places licenses are hassle-free to reproduce. be constructive to learn community rules and the worldwide employing License information on the internet.

If you're renting a car you'll have to ask the Rental Company what they require. They'll probably require an International Drivers License. If you're taking the bus you don't.

no, valid driver license issued by any state will be fine. if you are foreigner then you need valid international driver's license which you can apply in your country. of course, that's if you will be driving while visiting CA. if you don't plan to drive, then you don't need one.

Get an international driver's licence and it should be accepted in the States. Do a search for it on the net.
