I'm never sure because they always hand you the slip to sign with the spot for a tip.

There's a Chinese take-out place in our town with a tip jar on the counter. I do tip the young kid that takes our order and packages it, just like $1 or so, because he has a great personality, he works extremely hard, our order is always correct and he always throws in the extra duck sauce he knows we like. We enjoy seeing him when we pick it up, because he has a 1,000-watt smile and works very hard on his English, so I think he gets lots of tips with his winning personality. Good for him, I say.

No, you do not tip. In fact, when I worked at a pizza joint, we were forbidden to accept any tips if they were offered. Only the servers could accept tips, and delivery drivers. The slip that you sign that has a place for a tip sounds like you paid by credit card, which automatically has a spot for a tip. If you don't tip, don't worry, they weren't expecting one anyways.

Tipping is neither required nor expected for take-out.

The only time I could imagine tipping for take-out is if you had a very special order for a big occasion, and the person went above and beyond the call of duty to make sure the order was just perfect. Then if you wanted you could insist on leaving them a 10-15% tip, although they might prefer a warm testimonial or letter of praise which they could show to their boss or clients.

No you don't tip for a take out. they hand you the same slip they use for the ones that eat in the place!

Yes you should.

The server is the one who packages your food for you. And this takes more work and time then just serving it to you at the table.

10% for take-out is an excellent standard.

This really pertains to restaurants that also offer take out food. Not really for places that only do take out from behind a counter.

You people are cheap! Of course you should tip. In most cases, the host/hostess is preparing your to-go order. They may not cook the food but they are preparing everything else that involves a to-go order(taking your order, placing your order,napkins,sauces/dressings, forks/knives, confirming everything is correct, etc). And no, i dont work in F&B.

No, not for takeout.
Just because they present the possibility does not mean that they are practicing good etiquette. Could you imagine tipping at mcdonalds? Or how about tipping at Staples?

If the service was good, I'll always throw a dollar in the tip jar if they have one.

I don't. They're not doing anything special. The tip spot is there for people who eat in.

Tip only for delivery, not if you pick it up. At a sit down buffet I do tip, (less than usual) since they do come & refill your water & clean up after you...
