Any bread that is starting to lose moisture in considered "day-old bread." It actually has to be older than one day or you can leave it out so it will dry up faster. If you make bread pudding with soft bread it will dissolve into the pudding. Some people use sour-dough bread or a European bread which is tougher.

Day Old Bread is exactly what it says, old bread. Before preservatives and other longevity storing chemicals, bread had to be purchased on a daily basis. Day old bread was what the baker had made the previous day. For bread pudding, and other things like croutons, it is just bread that has aged a little bit and is a bit firmer than fresh bread. For good Bread Pudding just leave the required slices out the night before making the recipe. If moldy that is too old bread.

"Day old" bread is just that....1 day old. Let's say you bought a loaf of fresh (hot out of the oven) french bread/baguette. "Day old" is the bread that didn't sell from the day before or the bread you bought the day before but didn't eat. Most bakeries do not use preservatives (like commercial bakeries) that's why the loaf of bread from the grocery store can usually remain "soft" for at least a week. "Day old" bread is usually a little bit harder because it's dried out a little. It's great for making things like bread pudding, garlic bread, croutons, crostini & seasoned bread crumbs. Hope this reply helps.

You just need it to get a little stale. Just open the bag to the air.
