I've just read a question where a person's teenage sister is hearing voices. she could be mentally ill, she could be stressed, she could be attention seeking. Who knows?
But my real question is about some of the answers, people seem to think that she has been taken over by the devil or their answer is to pray for her.
Really!?!? Do people honestly believe that? If my arm drops off, are there really people out there who think the best advice is to pray, no go to a hospital, not see a doctor, but to pray!!!
No wonder the world is in such a state if its populated by such illiterate, uneducated whackjobs!
This is not a dig at religion, so please don't inundate me with, i'm going to hell because i'm anti-religion etc etc responses.
This is an honest question about the state of some people's minds and the worrying responses they give, for goodness sakes, some of these people are probably parents, what do they do if their child is sick or scared, tell them to pray.....!!!!!!

Thanks so much!

Perhaps it is sheer ignorance on their part, or a flawed belief system that they hold as true.

Praying can help some people in some situations but not everybody in all situations. Prayer, like talking to yourself, can help people verbalise their thoughts so they can see the problem more clearly.
If someone tells me to pray about it, I take it to mean I should think carefully about the problem and try to come up with my own answer. Those who do pray are asking for an answer from a "higher source".
One thing which is almost ironic is all these people who are praying are asking to hear voices in their heads which is precisely what this girl is suffering from.

I too have just answered that question - I believe in most cases (99%) it is down to mental illness, but I do know we should never totally rule out such things as possession, just because we do not understand something does not mean it goes away by saying it does not exist. Prayers are good - to which ever God/Goddess they offer comfort to the faithful and simply give people "something" to do when they know not what else to do.
But prayers are not an immediate or practical form of help, and medical advice should always be sought.

I have noticed that people hide behind their religions. This is the reason. They can't make up their own minds or make decisions so they hide behind their religion. I agree with you completely, but some people really do believe that. In the news a couple years ago (like in the mid or late 90s) there was a story about a couple whose child was dying from some disease but they wouldn't authorize the hospital to give them any treatment because it was against their religion. Yea...people are crazy!

I think some people are just trying to be funny. I also think though that the person who posted the question should really think about it before posting a question like that. I mean they must have seen the site and some of other people's answers. If this person is as worried about their sister as they say then this is about the worst place to ask a question like that. They need to be speaking to a trained person about it not a load of people unknown to eachother basically on here to either have a laugh, insult people or genuine ones who like to try and answer a straight forward question. Posting questions that have anything to do with medical conditions or anything like that is a bit silly as people could tell u anything and some people may take this to be fact. I do agree with i on the silly religious answers though

I am not religious either! If someone is mentally ill no amount of praying will help! If anyone has ever undergone a traumatic experience or something very serious, your mind can do funny things. If I was that family I would take kid to counselling cos could be some kind of experience that has disturbed her.

Everyone puts their faith and belief in something different. Yes, some people truly believe to just pray. And some people believe that prayer does nothing and totally rely on medicine. Then there is a very large gray area in between.
The thing is, I have seen both ends work....so who knows.

Not to defend these people, but maybe in their mind they feel that they are trying to help... not that I agree with that answer 100 %. a person who is hearing voices has a chemical imbalance in the brain. With medication these symptoms will resolve. I am also a religious person. God gave us the knowledge to know with current medical science what the problem is and how to fix it.

Totally agree, to imply that just because someone is hearing voices she has been taken over by the devil and needs their prayers, if they call that help they are on the wrong site.

The inherent flaw with answering questions with "try praying and going to church" is that if somebody is religious, it's a given that they'll be doing that anyway and if they're not religious, then they're just wasting their time.

It's funny that I found this question because my advice is NEVER to pray. I guess I'm one of the few that think that doesn't even work. Kudos.
