It depends on the extent to which you have learned other languages. French has more verb tenses than English, and has grammatical gender too. So if you've studied a language such as Spanish or German, you'll already have some level of preparation to help you learn the various tenses. If not, then you'll make plenty of mistakes at first, just as anyone learning something new does. But don't get discouraged; you'll eventually get it by practice, and over time you'll begin to see a correlation in grammatical structure between English and French. As Goethe once put it, "Wer keine fremde Sprache spricht, kennt seine Muttersprache nicht" (whoever doesn't speak a foreign language doesn't know his own).

Is French Hard To Learn

I'd highly recommend Rocket French to others. Why? It is especially useful for "false beginners" like me. It was most beneficial to have a clear and concise explanation in English and then a comparison to French. The group French lessons I had recently taken would never explain in English what it was they were imparting, ie. an English translation of grammar points, or vocabulary, etc. - this was frowned upon. But http://tinyurl.com/RocketFrenchToday does this.

It clears up any confusion and lets you move on without feeling unsure or confused on just what it is you are saying/comprehending. You can really benefit from having this wealth of information to guide you and it'll give you a lot of confidence in learning French. I work with quite a few Quebecois and they have been very impressed with my progress ever since I started using Rocket French.

The weekly newsletter is most helpful in providing interesting aspects of French culture and language and reading the text has become easier and easier to understand. Often I start following a lesson and find I click on some aspect that I'm not too sure about and then follow this link to a deeper level and I get so deep into the subtleties that I loose track of what it was I was trying to study but nevertheless I gain a clear understanding of what it was that intrigued me. This increases my confidence tremendously that the next time I come across this point I can move on knowing I understand instead it instead of just brushing it by. So, I find that I now don't worry about not finishing a lesson from front to back because there is also so much more to learn on the way through the lesson from the links provided. A text book could never do this. The electronic version is so much more handy to use.

No. Since you're asking this in English I'm assuming you're good at it. English speakers would be able to recognize a lot of words in French as they're cognates.

The best way is to start out with reading and listening, which is the easiest to learn. First though get an overview of the grammar components in French so you know what you'll meet. Don't learn grammar, just understand that there's verbs with different conjugations, masculine and feminine nouns, etc. Use Wiki if you need some more detail. Find a good grammar chart using google images (French Grammar Chart) that shows you all the verb conjugations, regular and irregular, and other Grammatic points in a neat overview.

Then to learn to read the fastest, get correctly and in context pop-up translated texts. No google or volunteer translations with missing or incorrect meanings, that only leads to frustration. I mean interlinear French to English books so you can keep reading fast while only needing a short glance at the interlinear text to see the translation. That is the fastest way to learn new words as well. Another example can be found on "learn-to-read-foreign-languages.com" and also includes vocabulary training for the words that were read and which you'd like to practice some more.

Look for interlinear French books for example on Amazon, search for "French Interlinear".

It is not easy, but not impossible. In French, there are lots of words similar to English; yet the grammar is quite different. If you already learned Spanish, learning French should be easier because many complications in French, like considering gender or conjugation, are similar to Spanish. Anyway, you'll never know unless you try! Good Luck!!!!!
