Greenhouse gasess trap additional heat in the Earth's atmosphere. (Heat that would have normally dissipated into space.) The heat continues to build up like the inside of a greenhouse. (Hense the terminology.) The increasing temperatures causes a number of environmental changes, especially the ocean. Ocean temps rise and a number of species lose their habitats. In addition, the rising temps causes polar ice caps to melt causing ocean levels to rise.

One answer here says that this idea is liberal BS. OK, here are two things that I noticed personally:
1. Last year I went to a big science meeting with scientists from all over the world. There was a talk about global warming and about 2000 people were listening to it in a big auditorium. When the talk ended, the speaker asked the audience- how many of you are scientists? Half the hands went up. Then he said, how many are from the insurance industry? the other hands went up. There were a thousand insurance industry analysts there who had decided that global warming was happening and they were trying to decide what to do about all the policies they have written on property that is near the ocean, like say, in New York city!
2. I started to go to Alaska in 1990 and have been back many times to study glaciers. One glacier in particular. But I won't be going back - my glacier is gone, melted, history! And so is a lot of the Arctic ice. That glacier wasn't liberal or conservative.

Global warming is basically pollution caused from many things, namely cars, aerosols, etc.
Fumes that rise up to the o-zone layer (thin "invisible" layer around the Earth)
Recently we heard news that the hole us humans caused had actually stopped ... and now it's closing, which is great for us because if Global Warming continued at it's height the weather would have increased 1degree every year (sounds great for us Brits lol) but global warming was melting ice caps and eventually would have made Earth nearly ALL water.

one response suggest that the ozone layer has closed and that it is all in the past tense...it is quite feasible that global warming will continue and accelerate. Carbon emissions from sources as diverse as flatulence of cows used in intensive meat farming - often being grazed on former forest land is a mjor contributor as is the burning of fossil fuels in such things as gas hungry SUVs or 4x4s and more worringly airline traffic that is increasing year on year...as the temperature rises and the ice caps melt wwe will also see carbon trapped in permafrost being released a an unprecedented rate into the atmosphere triggering a faster and faster environmental disaster - oh and lets not forget countries such as India and China the most populous on the planet moving from a bicycle to motorcycle culture and now all wanting and aspiring to car culture....hmmmm carbon emissions in extremis
In short we're pretty screwed

global warming is causing the worlds ice caps to melt and the oceans to rise at rapid rates and major climate changes around the world they say in 50-200 years the world will come to an end and life will start all over again the mass extinctions on earth have all been do to major climate changes. us using as much electricity and burning as much oil that we do is what is causing it.

Bad. Specialists now claim that estimates expected for
2050 could come upon us by 2015 and latest 2025!
I only hope that Bush is still around to choke along with
the rest, whatever this rest may be!

usually they refer to greenhouse gasses being trapped in places where they shoudl not be and thus well we have a virtual meltdown...little by little...
