You need to go to this site www.Jefferspet.com you can order Ivermectin there Iver. is a powerful med. that vets use for LOTS of things but I would need to know the wieght of your dog and age to give you a proper dosage but You would give Ivermectin daily for one month then stop for two weeks and then start it again This will kill all baby heart worms so they wont keep growing into adults into the heart and I had one say after a yr the dog came back NEG. :) so you can try this. But caution that while the babies are dieing there are passing through the blood which can cause blood clots so you need to watch the dog and make sure its ok. I hope i helped I know heart worm treatment is costly

The dog need meds that you can only get from the vet. There is nothing that I know of that you can buy over the counter to cure heartworms.

Treating hearworms is expensive (in my area, about $300) and there is no guarantee. The poison that kills the heartworm, in some cases can also kill the dog. (I believe it is arsenic based)

In the future, be sure to have your dogs on heartworm preventative such as Interceptor or Heartgard. Interceptor and Heartgard are preventatives, NOT cures.

I am sorry to hear that your dog has this condition. It is so much better to spend a few dollars every month to prevent this often-fatal disease, than it is to try to cure it.

Good luck, and I hope all goes well for the dog.

No, I'm not going to give you the "if-you-can't-afford-it speech".

Last year, I took in a stray dog, and I prayed that he didn't have heartworm. First thing I did was get him tested. That's why I know how much it costs to treat it in my area. Now, he's on Interceptor, (he tested negative for HW).

Again, good luck.

There is nothing OTC to kill heartworms.

Tell whomever it is that owns the dog that they shouldn't have a dog if they cannot afford to properly care for it by taking it to the vet and giving heartworm preventative.

Yes, you are correct. The life of an innocent creature is at stake and the poor thing is in the care of a bunch of idiots that think you can care for it's illness with OTC drugs. C'mon now!

Take the dog to a vet or surrender it to an animal shelter so that it be properly cared for and possibly be adopted by someone that can afford to take care of it properly, not a Yahoo (no pun intended) who will take advice of what to give the dog by posting a question on Yahoo Answers?

One more thing? What if some quack gives an answer and they sound like they know what they are talking about but it is something that will KILL the dog that isn't yours?

The makers of Rescue Remedy and Parvaid, Ambertech, have a product that says it will kill off heartworm.

Also, read an interesting article by Dr. Malernee. He's a vet in Boca Raton, Fl.

The life span of a heartworm is about 2 yrs. If a dog has a very light heartworm count, he can be put on Heartgard. The Heartgard will not kill the heartworm, but will keep it from getting worse. In 2 yrs, the dog will be heartworm free.

No, there isn't anything OTC for use as a heart worm treatment. However, if you contact the Humane Society... not the animal shelter.... they often times will fund such a treatment. We just did a complete hip replacement on a Shepherd because the family just couldn't afford to pay for it. Try it please.

Hope I helped and Good Luck.

Unfortunately, there isn´t, because agressive filaricide treatment can be fatal to the host( your dog). If ouyr dog has a mid to large amount of adult worms inside, agressive treatment will sure kill them all, but also will predipose to pulmonary trombembolism, anfilactic shock, D.I.C( disseminated intravascular coagulation), among others, conditions potentially fatal and rapidly progressive, making the traetment worse than the illness.

You have to get heartworm medicine from a veterinarian. It isn't sold over the counter. Over the counter stuff is just for intestinal worms. (You can treat the latter with piperzine citrate from a feed store.)

I am sorry to hear of your plight.
All I can say is that no dog who has had heartworm has ever been cured. Meds just stall the enevitable...death.
So far it can only be prevented. Like cancer I guess.
Sorry.
