The ONLY safe method to treat heartworm disease is with vet prescribed treatment protocols. Anything you try over the counter, without vet advice or monitoring will likely kill the dog. The treatment protocol prescribed will involve confining the dog, and the amount and type of meds will be dictated by the degree of infection. If this person isn't willing to do vet treatment, they need to turn it over to someone that will. This is a long, drawn out process, and the only people qualified to oversee it are vets!
PS If this isn't your dog, you can't legally do anything to help it without owner permission. If you're concerned, call animal control and report that you know of a dog not receiving needed medical care.

I am sorry to say there is nothing over the counter that can kill heart worms. The only medications that will kill heartworms is very dangerous. It must be done very precisely. Or the treatment could kill the dog. If you have had the dog on medications like Heartgaurd for heartworms all year around and had at least 1 test yearly. The manufacturer will pay for the treatments. Search around to different vets and clinics and see if you can get a payment arrangment.

Only a vet can do it.
Arsenic is used in the proper dosage.
Only a vet. The wrong dosage can kill the dog. In any event it is still dangerous but the worms will kill anyway.

heart guard or some other medicine given by the vet and i do believe it is not very expensive and you give it to your dog once a month. i don't know of any over the counter medicines but get the medicine from the vet to save you and your family from the loss of your four legged family member.

From what I understand, it's a very expensive procedure to get rid of heart worms, if you can get rid of them at all. This is why they have heart worm preventive out...so dog's won't catch it. I have not heard of anything over the counter to help...sorry 'bout that. It's very sweet of you to care enough to try and save this sweet baby...but unfortunately, it does take a vet to treat it.

It can't hurt to call a vet and ask your question. If you tell them meds are not affordable, they might tell you what to do. It would be nice if they would treat the dog for free. Good luck, I am praying for the poor dog.
