the breed info site says this> The dense, harsh, short-haired coat is easy to groom. Brush with a firm bristle brush to remove the dead hairs. While the Chesapeake needs the occasional bath to prevent any noticeable odor, they should not be bathed so often that the oily texture is stripped out. The oily coat helps protect it from icy waters. This breed is an average shedder.
And the breed club site says> His coat requires little grooming and no clipping. A good rinse with fresh water after a swim in the pond, or marsh will retard bacteria from multiplying; it is the bacteria that cause the characteristics smell. A warm bath - given only when necessary - but especially when the dog is shedding, will loosen dead hair and keep the coat in top condition.< > http://www.chesapeakesuk.com/breed/breed.htm
Lots of great info on the site.

For good skin conditioning, and between bath freshness, you can use Colgate Men's Shaving Foam..just the cheapest old fashoined kind..apply the foam, rub it in, and wipe it dry with a towel..then brush to remove dead hair..keeps him fresh and clean, and good immolients for his coat and skin.

No they're not. Try giving him/her an oatmeal bath(they do have shampoos for dogs like this @ Walmart or Kmart. Not expensive!) This will help with the dandruff and should help with the odd smell. If it does not help with the odor, you might want to take him/her to the vet and have this checked out. It could be something more serious or you just may need a special shampoo that only the vet can give you.
Hope this helps. Good luck!

Some dogs stink more than others because their glands in their skin are always secreting. You should look for a shampoo that addresses odors and also some sort of moisturizing conditioner for the dry skin. (try a pet store rather than a grocery or wal-mart)

No, there could be a skin infection. Check for raw spots. If the dog is older there may be issues with anal glands and should be expressed.
