When I asked about "agnostic terrorists" two particular responses caught my eye:
One saying that McVeigh was an agnostic, which apparently isn't true:
Timothy McVeigh professed his present belief in "a God" in a recorded interview with Time Magazine.[2] The Guardian reported that McVeigh wrote a letter claiming to be an agnostic, but no text of such a letter (or tangible proof of its existence) has been published or made public in any medium.[3] McVeigh accepted the Sacrament of Extreme Unction from a priest of the Roman Catholic Church shortly before his death, and he had been visited by a priest during his time in prison but expressed his wish to keep the details of his beliefs private.
And another confusing (for like the 10,000th time on this board agnosticism and atheism).
Are agnostics so feared that people need to engage in false smear campaigns?

So, Thomas, if it's not fear, then what is the motivation behind the false smear campaign?
actions speak louder than words, son.

McVeigh did believe in god albeit a twisted version of it. His primary reference material was the Turner Diaries. This is the "bible" of white supremists and basically stated that all non-whites were inferior and deserved to die. Not to sure about the agnostic part since I never heard that much about it but his views were more christian terrorist rather than agnostic terrorist. This white supremist movement which is largely steeped in religion and freedom of speech would qualify McVeigh as a believer even though his perceptions of "god" were quite....off base.
believers fear agnostics simply for the fact that these people "can't make up their minds" so to speak. they believe in something, just not sure what. whereas believers, full of tolerance and love, assert that their god is the ONLY god there is and the others are okay, but not right. No one wants to play for the losing team so best way to make that clear is by pointing out, who's the losing team. As religion seeps into politics, so to does politics seep into religion. and nothing spells politics out better than a good smear campaign.

"Are agnostics so feared that people need to engage in false smear campaigns?"
Probably. Without any solid proof that agnostics are evil heathens, some people of a strong faith have to make stuff up to prove that they are indeed evil and of the devil.
Otherwise, how can you succesfully turn people away from Agnosticism and get them into whatever religion someones trying to force on them?
I bet Agnostics are feared because they have a great point of view concerning God/Gods. They're right in that the proof isn't there on either side of the debate. It must kill some religious folk to know that there are beliefs that are proven right and it's not theirs.
I also love when people demand they 'take a side' What a freaking laugh. Agnostics are smart people usually and I love the way they see belief in dieties.

I would ask the same about Christians.
I think people are confused as to exactly what an agnostic is. Everyone seems to be clear on the position of athiests, but I don't think people have a good understanding of where an agnostic stands.

I didn't read your question, but I think the important point is that TM did not (I assume) blow up a building because of god. Or because of his uncertainty about god.
His religious view (I assume) didn't play a role at all.
Is that what you were getting at?

I believe in God, I do not believe in any organized religion. I guess some people think that without the rules of religion it is impossible to love God. That is so untrue.
I have no questions about God.
