Define "contaminated" . . .

Is the water that comes out of your tap 100.00000000% pure hydrogen oxide? No -- there are all sorts of things dissolved in the water -- minerals, organic materials, water purifiers, disinfectants, fluoridation to help reduce dental caries, metal ions from the pipes carrying the water, etc.

In some places, the water has more minerals dissolved -- that's called "hard water". In other places less, so it's called "soft water". We run the bulk water from our wells or reservoirs through a pretty rigorous set of water purification methods before it gets piped to your house, and at every step along the way, some small quantity of the materials it comes in contact with dissolve in the water that you receive.

It would be interesting to do an analysis of the bottled water you drink, and compare it to local tap water. I recall that Consumer Reports did a study a number of years ago, and the surprising result was that New York City tap water was selected as the best water in the competition with a whole bunch of frou-frou bottled waters.

yes. some tap water has chemicals in it that should not be ingested. In Chicago, the lake Michigan, so called "fresh water" has yeast and other fungus in it. If you drink too much of it you can become sick. My mother alway told me not to drink tap water but I was like whatever, I am invincible. She was right. Pay the little extra it cost to get purified water.

"Contaminated" can be such a loaded word. If you ask "Is tap water absolutely pure water?", the answer is no, it has minerals and other stuff dissolved in it. Is that stuff harmful? Generally not. In some parts of the country, well water might contain residues and stuff that might be harmful, but municipal water supplies are safe, even for people from France...

Much tap water comes to you through pipes soldered with lead and in the 50s they used concrete pipe that had high levels of asbestos in it not to mention that there has been a link established between Chlorine and bladder cancer.

Yes it is but not enough harmful stuff in it that will cause you to get sick or anything. With that said, it's always best to boil your water or use a water filter.
