It might be nothing, but it may also be a question of where he is licking. If he is licking or biting or scratching at his rear end obsessively, it could be a sign of worms. I would check with my vet either way, especially if its something that just started all of a sudden.

Is he licking himself obsessively? It could be an allergy. It could be boredom (give him a Kong toy stuffed with food to keep him occupied, or get him involved in a new activity like agility). It could be stress. Has something changed in the environment or your schedule lately? If so, go back to the way things were before if you can. If not, do your best to address what is upsetting him. For instance, if you are away from home more, have a dog walker exercise him or take him to day care a couple of times a week. Also, Comfort Zone is great for anxious dogs. Almost all pet supply stores sell it.

If he is licking objects, give him chew toys, exercise him, and use Bitter Apple to stop him from licking, or confine him when you can't watch him.

first and foremost.....as all dogs a good nutrious type dog food is soooooo important ..... my black lab had skin problems years ago.... no matter what type of shampoo we used to help her dry skin, oatmeal , aloe ,etc..... there was only a temporary relief , i found out that the dog food i was giving her at the time ( gravy train ) although the dog loved this type food but, it wasn't the proper nutrion content...... i switched to pro plan "senior" ( she was eight years old at the time ) and within two weeks the "constant" lickin' stopped..... remember whatever type food you decide to go with make sure that it doesn't contain any red as the manafactures use animal blood to aquire this color....check her skin at the base of the tail, any dryness of flaking is a sign of poor nutrion..... you have to feed the dog anyway why not give him something good ?? anyway it may save you a trip to the vet. as well as knowing that he is getting the proper diet....... no can food or table scraps !!!
my lab lived to the age of 14....... good luck

Licking is a sign of submission and an attempt to please. It is from the dogs wild instinct when they are trying to show the alpha submission or trying to win their approval. A dog who continously licks their lips is nervous or uncertain.

What is he licking? Himself? You? Both? Other stuff?

It could be that he is lacking something in his diet, or it could be a nervous disorder. Go to the vet. Good luck.
