There names where the single-cab pickup(one bench seat) and the double-cab pick up(two rows of seats). While vw stopped shipping these trucks to the states in the early 70's, it was due to a high tariff(called the chicken tax) that basically made foreign trucks to expensive to compete with American made ones. But production did last much longer overseas.

The kombi is a specific bus model that does not include the trucks. Basically it was the same as the panel van, but with windows. It was all so the model that all campers started life as. In defense, it has to be the most commonly mis-used term when it comes to talking about buses.


Update: I've listed my sources and will provide more that the Kombi is a bus and not a truck, but would be very interested in seeing sources that state otherwise. Please correct me so I can stop giving out the wrong answer.

KOMBI for combination fold down sides flat bed up with the sides pick up. really neet truck but a lot underpowered. And your legs were ahead of the front axle.
