My grandpa died when my dad was only 5. So i dont know him. I remember being little and looking at a couple medals he won in WW2. When i was 14 my mum and dad split up for awhile and my dad and I moved in with his girlfriend. They got into a fight and we left in the middle of the night leaving everything there. Is there a way to find out what the medals were for, or even get new ones?

Oh dont give up.. Gimme a few minutes and I can have some choice info for you. His discharge record most likely was saved, so dont worry about it. My dad was in WW2, so dont sweat it. Odds are, apart from his WW2 victory medal, I couldnt tell you what medals or ribbons he earned, unless I knew what unit he was in, what branch of service, etc...

The WW2 medals are below:

Navy: http://www.usmedals.com/medals.html?s=navy&p=ww2

Marines: http://www.usmedals.com/medals.html?s=usmc&p=ww2

Army: http://www.usmedals.com/medals.html?s=army&p=ww2

Ok, the following link gets the process started. any next of kin can request this, or if you fill out SF180, you can get a copy with no next of kin info. Anyways, I hope this helps....

You are able to contact the military archieves and try to give his name and birth date if you know it. My husband did this search for his grandfather who was in WW2. Contact me at Dylansmom1605@yahoo.com and I will let you know the process he took to get the information. My husband is not home right now, so I will try and get back to you soon.

If his military records survived the fire in St. Louis, MO. in 1972 you can find out there. Either online or in person, prefered information is his DD214 number, social security number, birthdate.
