Jelly is made from the concentrated and sweetened juices of fruit - all the solids are strained out before it is canned, resulting in a more or less clear spread.

Jam has the fruit left in it when it is canned.

Depending on the fruit, no pectin needs to be added - pectin occurs naturally in all fruit, but sometimes in quantites too small to allow it to gel.

Jelly is translucent for the most part made with fruit juice and pectin to make it jell while jam is the whole crushed fruit to which is added pectin. Jam is also called a preserve.

Jelly has had the fruit bits strained out, so the consistency is very smooth, like jello.

Jam has pieces of the cooked fruit, so it is thicker and has texture based on the fruit you are using (seeds for raspberries, slices of strawberries, etc).
