Here is my story though for you:

The first thing you need to know is most dogs are EXTREAMELY attention and food driven so lots of praise and small treats goes miles. Pits are eager to please so alternate between treats and petting as a reward. Positive reinforcement will get you miles further then hitting or yelling at your dog. For the commands persistence and repetition is the key. Try and sign up for a training class in your area.

Now for potty training...

First DO NOT USE NEWSPAPERS in the house they stink to high heaven and your dog will learn to pee on all newspapers - even the one you are reading and put down just for a minute...

Second don't believe the line about crates being a dog’s den...Dogs are domesticated and their natural instincts only go so far. IF you bought the dog from a pet store or it was separated too early from the mom and most are - the dog seriously doesn't get the den theory. No matter how small the crate they might still go...My dog never got the crate thing. I cannot crate him outside of a time out because he pees every time I put him in there (No it is not to big get off that Mr. Random Skeptical Reader person). If I leave the house and he is in the crate he gets anxiety poos. No amount of separation anxiety exercises and practice has eliminated this behavior. He still loves his crate and will hide in it even if has peed in it and I have not noticed…he lays by his own free will on the dry pee. Every single dog is different and the "den" rule simply does not apply universally. So don’t buy into this crap. You might find yourself washing your dog and crate 2 or more times a day…During the day when away I baby gate him in a hallway (kitchen works if doggie proofed) with pads at one end and a bed and bowl of water at the other and everyone is happier at the end of the work day. He is not ashamed and I have an easy clean up. You cannot ask your small dog to hold it for 6, 7, 8, 9 hours while you are gone.

You can combo train your dog...My dog was hard to train...I trained him inside with pee pee pads first. Arm & Hammer makes ones he won't shred and smell nice from the package. You can get these at Target. You can buy a spray to attract her to the pads (Hammi likes this one http://www.petco.com/shop/product.aspx?r... don't be alarmed if he licks it first - Hammi licks it then pees on it...) but mostly praise him when he shows interest in them and give him a treat when he goes on the pad. If your dog insists going inside this might help you save your floors. You can also look at http://www.wizdog.com for a nice thing to designate small potty (1' x 2' if that) area for the dog. When your dog gets bigger you put two side by side. If you go with the pad option I recommend a Diaper Champ (cheaper in the long run than a Diaper Gennie) so you are not taking out the garbage two or three times a day. Find it here: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/det...

For outside training - remember when new stuff goes in..old stuff comes out. You should try and schedule potty times 10 mintues after a schduled eating when they are young and 15-20 minutes when they are older. Do not free feed your dog this will make it easier for you to time the 'out' part. Dogs also need to do #1 and #2 upon waking in the morning and you should take him out before bed.

Once you see the dog start to go potty you praise him and give him a small treat when done. You need to do this EVERY time he goes outside even if he pees 30 times on the walk. If you have a yard you need to stand out there with him until she potties to praise him and give him a treat. (Boring and long but it is worth it) You also need to be patient. For Hamilton, he needs a full block of walking before he does #2.

To help your dog tell you when he needs to go outside get some bells for the door and ring them every time you take her out to potty. Some dogs don't bark much at all unless they are being butt heads so these bells are popular in my dog world. They have a nice looking set here http://www.helpingudders.com/poochiebell... and a portion of the sale goes to the rescue of your choice.

GOOD LUCK!!

Well I have a Pittie and he wasn't fully house broken until about 8 months. He would just have little accidents.... We got him a kennel and that helped considerably. One of the most important things about training dogs is catching them in the act and also consistency.
To paper train your dog I suggest starting off with some "Puppy Pads" you can buy them at Petsmart. They are scented to the puppy will be drawn to them and want to go potty on them and then slowly move them out side. If you catch your pup going on the floor. Shout "NO!" DO NOT HIT YOUR PUPPY! After the you have the pup's attention bring the dog to the place you want him to go potty. After he finishes in the correct area praise him like crazy.
To get your pup to stay your dog will need to be in a calm mood. Set your dog in front of you and have proper eye contact. Firmly tell your dog to stay. Wait a few seconds and give praise. Slowly over days wait longer to give praise. Then after about a week or two start to slowly take a step or to back while repeating the command. Do this step gradually as well and eventually your dog will be able to Stay like a champ.

Petsmart training worked for mine. But he is really smart and learned to go outside in just a few days. I never could do the paper training thing though. Its best to buy a crate so that when he is able to hold it for long enough, you can put him in there when you are not home. Dogs don't "go" where they sleep. As far as teaching him to stay goes. You must start for very short periods of time and work up to longer lengths of time. Lots of rewards and repetition are going to be needed. Good luck.

Crate training is the most popular and generally most effective method of house breaking. Paper training rarely works. Considering the breed of dog, you really need to get this dog into puppy kindergarten, then continue with obedience training and regular training updates. This is a breed that needs a lot of training to combat the bad breeding that has been in the breed for years. They need plenty of activity during the day as well. If you want this dog to develop into and stay a wonderful companion, you need to keep it well trained and give it lots of activity and love. Don't train him yourself...some breeds do best with the guidance of a trained professional...and this is one of those breeds.

Check with your local humane society and see if they have a trining porgram they usually do and are fairly in expensive. The earlier you get the training started and stay committed to it the better they end results

take them outside when they sniff around to pee or poop. this teaches them the right place to go, and doesn't scare them into peeing in hidden places from being corrected. never paper train, it just teaches them that it is okay to go inside. get it professionally trained for other commands

Sternness, but no hitting. And doggie treats as a reward. Palm forward. "Stay!" Snap finger and point index finger at ground: "Sit!" Doggie treat. "Good boy/girl!" But with a pit, because of their dog aggressive nature and stubborn streak, one really needs an obedience class.
