Hey sweetcheek,

There are lots of free genealogy web sites. Roots has a lot of good free information. Family Search on LDS is also very good for some ancestors. Ellis Island works free too. Depending on what you are doing, not everything is free. For example, unless someone gives you copies of vital records, they cost from $4.00 (lowest I ever paid) to $40.00 (most I ever paid).

If one record saves you countless hours of searching, then pay the money. Also, genealogy is proving your ancestors, not just putting merged trees together. Trees on Genealogy.com are wrong all the time - beware of wrong data. Just because someone was born near the right time, and in the same town, does not make a match for your ancestor. It could cost you lots of valuable time down the road.

The free information that I have gotten came from people on GENFORUM that I never met before! The site is listed below, go there and put in one of your grandparents surnames. That will get you started to see who else is interested in the same ancestors.

Don't bother. If you want to do real geneology, pay the fee for ancestry.com and/or genealogy.com.
