Just thought it'd be cool to share as home educators what books our children are enjoying, public and private schoolers may reply too as well as their parents. My 12yo ds learned the formula for PI from "Archimedes and the Door To Science" as well as numerous other types of math and he really desires to learn more geometry and algebra because of that book. Right now he is enjoying "The Mystery of the Periodic Table", it has inspired to learn both within and outside the book the science of chemistry. He loved all the "Harry Potter" novels. My 8yo dd loves "Handbook of Nature Study" by Anna Comstock, "The Secret Garden", and now she too is enjoying the "Harry Potter" series and she adores the classic "Secret of the Woods" by William Long. Both really like to read living books that bring life to history, biographies, sciences, etc....

What books have not only inspired your children but have also helped develop within your child(ren) a natural love for learning?

I don't have any kids yet, but I was homeschooled myself. I read anything I could get my hands on. I loved Jane Austen, books set in the Civil War Era, American Girl series, the Hardy Boys, Nancy Drew, Trixie Belden, and many others.

My children are still quite young. I have a 6yr. old and a 3 yr. old. My oldest is reading now but hasn't really tackled too many novels as of yet. He does, however, love Garfield comics! Ha! He has quite the collection.Together we are on the fifth book in the Harry Potter series. We've also been reading many books about Autumn as the season approaches. Today we read one called "Leaf Man" and they both loved it. I'm reading Stephen Hawking's "A Briefer History of Time" and really enjoying it.

Rainbowbright: it's not too "bright" to come in to the homeschool section and wonder why it's about homeschooling.

Now, to answer the question:
Let's see, my 9th grade daughter is reading A Case For Christ, student edition, Dateable, and Princess Diaries 3

My second grader is reading A Case For Christ, kid edition and basically a library book every day or two.

We are also doing a read aloud of A Horse and His Boy (going through the entire series)

I am reading D'Aulaire's Book of Greek Mythology, A Case For Christ, adult edition, A Case for a Creator, Hatchet, and Rejoice (part of a series by Karen Kingsbury, highly recommended)

Good question, thanks!

"Napoleon Bonaparte" by Schom
"Empire" by Hardt
"The way we never were" by Coontz
"Europe" by Davies
"Molekulare Zellbiologie" by Spektrum (in German)
"Decoding darkness" by Tanzi

then lots of books on lions, the brain, sociology, and psychology...

The curriculum was mixed to suit them and they chose books on their subjects of choice (or desire/interest)
